AI is helping us better understand how landslides occur – so that we can reduce risks. Researchers at Rochester Institute of Technology examined aerial views and elevation data of landslide sites, and used machine learning to achieve 80-94 percent accuracy in identifying landslide movements in diverse locations around the world. Specifically, the study introduces a method of examining slides, flows, and fails, finding distinct patterns. “Our algorithm is not predicting landslides,” explained researcher Nishant Malik. “But the people who are in the business of predicting landslides need to know more information about them, like what caused them and what mechanisms they were.” Learn more ➡️ https://ow.ly/3Ypu50RBc1x

Dedicated to building disaster resilience and tackling climate change through implementation of the Sendai Framework
Info
At the UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR), we're dedicated to helping countries and communities lower risk and raise resilience in the face of natural and human-induced hazards. Our work is guided by the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction, a 15-year agreement adopted by the international community in 2015, which was the first building block of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

🚨The people of Beirut were not to know that they were living near 2,700 tonnes of explosives. They were unaware of this risk until the blast tore through their lives: this devastating event killed more than 200 people and left over 300,000 homeless. The tragedy could have been prevented if robust disaster risk reduction plans were in place. It is the responsibility of governments around the world to identify risks so disasters like the explosion in Beirut never happen. https://ow.ly/BIxa50RyCyb

💡Almost everything you need to know to effectively communicate about disaster risk and start saving lives! Yes, disaster risk communication can disseminate early warnings – but if it's done well, it can also prompt conversations about risk, and shift how people think, feel and act in response. 📢 BBC Media Action recommends a 4-phase basic process to guide disaster risk communication, with related activities, circulating in a continuing loop. ♻️ Discover the #PreventionWeb disaster risk communication hub to learn about the process and access further resources ➡️ https://ow.ly/Plcw50TV4Gz #EarlyWarningsForAll

♿ The G7's Solfagnano Charter on inclusion and disability calls for full and effective participation and inclusion of persons with disabilities in prevention and management of emergency preparedness and post-emergency management situations, including climate crises, armed conflicts and humanitarian crises. "When disasters strike, persons with disabilities are amongst those most at risk," says SRSG Kamal Kishore. "UNDRR works with disability-led organisations to foster greater inclusion of persons with disabilities at all levels and all stages of disaster risk reduction and disaster management planning. It is not enough to include plans for persons with disabilities – we need to ensure their full and continued participation in every aspect of the planning process," he says. When disasters strike, persons with disabilities are amongst those most at risk. For this reason we welcome the G7's Solfagnano Charter on inclusion and disability. I especially commend the G7 Ministers for specifying Priority 8, which calls for full and effective participation and inclusion of persons with disabilities in "prevention and management of emergency preparedness and post-emergency management situations, including climate crises, armed conflicts and humanitarian crises." Persons with disabilities often face greater challenges during and after disasters; and they have varied and unique resilience and need for support. Many find themselves isolated: lacking timely evacuation warnings, accessible transportation options, essential medical care, and support for themselves and their caregivers. UNDRR works with disability-led organisations to support greater inclusion of persons with disabilities at all levels and at all stages of disaster risk reduction and disaster management planning. It is not not enough to just include plans for persons with disabilities – we need to ensure their full and continued participation in every aspect of the planning process. I invite you to learn more about UNDRR's work on disability inclusion in DRR: https://ow.ly/MEAA50TVbTR As the G7 countries move forward to implement the Solfagnano Charter, UNDRR offers its support – especially with regard to Priority 8. 2024 is the year of the three COPs – and an opportunity for a united approach to address environmental challenges and reduce disaster risks 👇
Head of EVES Division at United Nations University - Institute for Environment and Human Security (UNU-EHS)
#dyk that 2024 is the year of the three COPs? 🌍 Within three months, the Parties of the United Nations Conventions on Biological Diversity (UN Biodiversity) the Framework Convention on Climate Change (UN Climate Change) and the Convention to Combat Desertification (UN Convention to Combat Desertification) hold conferences in which they set path for future actions to fight #climatechange, #biodiversityloss and #landdegradation. As these environmental challenges are highly interlinked, we need to leverage synergies among the Conventions to accelerate action. The PEDRR Secretariat used the momentum of the three COPs and investigated how #ecosystembasedapproaches can bridge the efforts of the Conventions, and also of the #Sendai Framework for #DisasterRiskReduction. I had the great pleasure of leading the policy brief on behalf of the PEDRR network recently published by United Nations University - Institute for Environment and Human Security (UNU-EHS) on that very topic, drawing on the experiences of many wonderful partners. We found that ecosystem-based approaches are a connector of the global agendas and that they can help achieve multiple goals simultaneously 🌱 However, ecosystem-based approaches and their potential still need more attention to address multiple goals at the same time. Implementing these approaches requires integrated spatial planning, scientific evidence to avoid trade-offs and unintended outcomes, and financing opportunities to further upscale multi-goal oriented ecosystem-based approaches. We hope that our brief will inspire policy-makers to step up our game in using the power of ecosystem-based approaches across the Conventions and the Sendai Framework, as coordinated action is urgently needed to heal our planet ❤️🩹 Are you curious to learn more? 🌊"Tsunamis are the deadliest form of disaster. Yet, today, one third of the world’s population, mainly in least developed countries and small island developing states, are not covered by early warning systems." "Our #EarlyWarningsForAll initiative, which aims to protect everyone on Earth by 2027, prioritizes the needs of the most vulnerable.... Let us commit to leaving no one behind when a tsunami strikes, and work together to secure a safe, prosperous future for all" said António Guterres, UN Secretary-General. 5 November is World Tsunami Awareness Day.
