What We Do: At Minds Matter SoCal, our work centers around four key areas that are essential to our students' success: 1. Mentorship: Each student is paired with a dedicated mentor who offers personalized guidance and support. Our mentors, who come from diverse backgrounds and professions, play a crucial role in helping students build confidence, set academic and personal goals, and develop the skills necessary for success. 2. Academic Enrichment: We provide a comprehensive curriculum designed to enhance students' academic skills. Our workshops cover critical thinking, writing, and test preparation, ensuring that students are well-prepared for challenges in school and on standardized tests. 3. College Preparation: Navigating the college application process can be daunting, especially for first-generation college students. Minds Matter SoCal guides students through every step, from researching colleges to understanding application requirements. 4. DIARY OF A FELLOW IN DEEP PLACES (12) We wanted to organise a Christmas party in deep places. Whilst the deep places were our focal point, we intended to extend it to schools in neighbouring villages. So, we wore the robe of an event planner and commenced planning for the remarkable event. The purpose? We wanted our learners to have a feel of Christmas celebration and have fun. Also, we wanted an opportunity to meet and interact with learners from other schools. We were able to successfully plan a would-be grand event. However, there was a crux. Money! To execute our 'outstanding party', we were going to be spending several thousands of naira. After much deliberation, we had to reconsider. So, we opted for a low-budget yet remarkable celebration. The implication was that the event would be limited to only our schools and we would not be able to give food and souvenirs as we initially planned. Getting to the school premises, my learners were surprised to see the smiling unfamiliar faces that greeted them. It was meant to be a surprise so we didn't inform them. Then, we settled them for the activities. We went from watching a short educative movie to having quizzes in the three core subjects. We progressed to playing games and displaying talents (singing, dancing, drumming). The dancing styles got me laughing. That was part of the fun, actually. The children were taught new songs as well. One of the highlights of the event was having the children share their learning points. The learners were encouraged to be the best they could ever be. It was a great learning and relaxing event. Finally, we had our special Item 7. We smiled, laughed, played, learnt and had so much fun. Happiness was written all over the faces of our learners. Although we could not do as much as we wanted to do because of funds, we had an awesome Christmas celebration with the children. DISRUPTION: Students crave meaning and purpose now more than ever. I left a seasoned teaching career to provide experiential learning initiatives that curate environments for young people to learn resilience, grit, and teamwork by embarking on transformative adventures. I took a gigantic leap of faith to build a community, Mountain Goat Movement, without any funding because I firmly believe that young people deserve much more than what we are currently offering them in schools. Talking about improving mental health, resiliency, and community among our young people are just words -- this doesn't mean anything unless we are actually doing the boots on the ground work that will allow for our communities and schools to thrive. In 2023, I served over 2,000 families as a one-man team. I personally raised over $100,000 to fund low-income students on transformative trips from the Adirondacks to Antarctica. I launched over 15 events that served 3,200 people without a budget. Help me help the next generation. This is Part 3 of tracing the journey of “Breathing the Mission into the Fundraising Event to Maximize Funds Raised” using the example of a recent event of one of our clients Academy Prep (please review previous posts). Let’s speak about that actual Mission Moment or Impact moment during the program. At Auction Horizon, we find that the fundraising is most effective when the Live Auction is done before the Bid from the Heart (or Paddle Raise or Fund-the-Mission – that giving moment with many names 😊) In between these two fundraising components, is the most emotional peak…that impactful moment where the Mission burns brightest….where it whispers to each guest and moves hearts, resulting in raised hands. As many of you know, this moment of impact is either a video, a live testimonial, or a combination of both. Academy Prep makes use of a powerful and emotion evoking video at this pivotal time of the fundraising agenda. The production of this video is of a very high standard.
