June is a month that is richly saturated with commemorative days for children. June 11 was the first ever #InternationalDayofPlay. June 16 is the #InternationalDayoftheAfricanChild. At PATH, we like to say that play is serious business, since it is through play that children learn in the early years. Therefore, it behooves that in addition to making homes, preschools, health facilities, and other spaces child-friendly, it is critical that parents be empowered to play with their children, stimulate early learning, and help them reach their full potential. As such, it is not surprising that the entirety of June is #ParentingMonth, since supporting parents is the essential foundation of promoting early childhood development (#ECD). A few years ago, the Conrad N. Hilton Foundation challenged us to identify specific touchpoints and refine service delivery materials that would improve both the quality of developmental monitoring and counseling through primary health care (#PHC)—and ultimately, uptake of key parenting messages, behaviors, and practices by caregivers. What followed was iterative rounds of learning and discovery with service providers, caregivers, and government managers in Kenya and Mozambique, based on PATH's innovative Living Labs model for human-centered design (#HCD). We co-created several compelling solutions—often as simple as a job aid to emphasize existing developmental monitoring and counseling content in a routine health card; or simplifying guidance on how to conduct play sessions in a health facility waiting area. There were so many "aha" moments that we were overwhelmed (in a good way!)💡🌟💡🌟💡🌟 Please read the brief linked in the post below to learn more about how we did this 👇
As we look back on International Children’s Day and ahead to the International Day of the African Child, we're excited to highlight a new resource from our collaborative work for early childhood development (#ECD) in Kenya and Mozambique. To identify solutions that maximize the frequency and quality of ECD counseling in health services, we employed our Living Labs model of human-centered design in partnership with service providers, community members, and government stakeholders in Siaya County, Kenya, and the Monapo District of Nampula Province, Mozambique. Learn more about each step of the HCD process and the resulting, co-created solutions for ECD counseling: https://bit.ly/3yXmdZD #HumanCenteredDesign #EarlyChildhoodDevelopment #DayoftheAfricanChild #InternationalChildrensDay

The Education Cannot Wait (ECW) Multi-Year Resilient Program One, Grantee of UNICEF Ethiopia and Geneva Global, and implemented by Development Expertise Center (DEC), has made a substantial contribution to emergency education services in the Oromia Region. The project, which commenced in 2021, has significantly impacted over 6,000 children in the targeted zones of West and East Wollega, and the Sasiga and Nedjo Districts. The project has created a conducive learning environment by constructing learning blocks and spaces, providing access to water in schools, offering school feeding programs, and ensuring the protection of children through various services. It has also capacitated school teachers and provided learning and teaching materials for out-of-school children and conventional school learners in conflict-affected communities. Despite the challenging context, the project has successfully continued education by working closely with communities and stakeholders. This collaboration has enabled children to attain better education in the targeted schools. Development Expertise Center (DEC), as the implementing partner, has effectively reached the community through educational support, as detailed in the accompanying video. However, the project faced significant challenges, including security issues around the borders, high transportation costs, and difficulties in monitoring and documentation.

Let's not play politics but act as Ghanaians I am saddened to see that most E- blocks for the supposed day Senior High Schools located in deprived areas such as Wa West, Afram plains (Sampson Akura to be precise) among others are not not in use although completed and furnished since 2016, and the domitory 60% done. Seriously? And that of Wa West was not completed and yet another Six (6) block unit was constructed on the same land when they requested for a basic education unit. This is highly appalling, yet we go around doing other projects equally important. I mean, we have free SHS ongoing based on a track system operation, and students sometimes spend as little as a month in school and then vacates while there are E-Blocks getting destroyed in bushes. I am heart broken hearing this on TV3 news today the 16th of August 2024. Can we foster the continuity of projects? In that even when there is a change of government, projects are completed by whoever assumes power? THIS IS FOR GHANA and no political party. Is it not heartbreaking to see that children are deprived of education in this 21st century? Come on Ghana! We can do better!. When we play political feuds, what do we stand to gain aside our own "selfish" interests? This canker has been trending ages now and something must done about it. Let's go back to recent history and ponder over the many projects and industries established by our very own Dr Osagyefo Kwame Nkrumah (Deceased) and their current state. Able Ghanaian, you've got to be struck by this. @Government of Ghana please fix the E-Blocks and it shall ease if not all, a percentage of this track system and grant a memory-filled privilege to those of us in deprived areas. Education(formal and informal) is been said to be the key success by Solomon Ortiz, Hence No citizen is supposed to be deprived of basic education to at least Senior High School. Let's us Arise for a better Ghana. Ghana depends on You and I. Yes We Can. Thank you. #FixabandonedEblocks #TV3 #AbetterGhanaforaAll #supportchildeducation

Sometimes, with seemingly limited resources, unbelievable impact can be achieved. Gradual and steady progress, especially if it contributes to the development or advancement of humankind is a beautiful thing to witness. In 2017, a $100 challenge turned into one school building completed in 2019, then the second completed in 2022 and we are excited to complete our third school project next month, all in Togo, West Africa. Enrollment and attendance have increased up to 40+% and the state annual test passing rates have gone up from and average 45% to 100%; setting these children up to continue their education and build better lives for themselves and their communities. By providing a safe school building, kids are staying in class and learning, no longer running home when it rains, or living in fear that a poisonous snake will interrupt and harm them. In addition to classrooms with chalkboards and benches we provide the teachers space to prepare, restrooms and lunch pavilions so a full day of learning can be experienced. Come join us in building more safe schools. If you know of any foundations, please connect us. No matter the size of your contribution, even if you believe your resources are limited, together we will positively impact these kids and change their lives forever! During our visit on site in July we will both open up School #3 and visit the 2 remote locations already identified for our next projects. Enjoy the before and after images. https://lnkd.in/gWyFgAJ8
