From Variety: Fresh from his conquering of awards season, Cillian Murphy is the current leading man du jour. Strange then, that his follow-up to “Oppenheimer” still hasn’t secured a U.S. release. But “Small Things Like These” is just part of a growing new trend of starry indie titles that are struggling — or at least taking much longer than usual — to secure a U.S. sale. But it’s clear that projects that would previously have flown off the shelves domestically just don’t have the same immediate pulling power. And according to one source, it’s the lack of post-theatrical window deals with broadcasters and streamers that’s slowing things down. “The U.S. market has been very slow because of the fact no one seems to have a pay one deal anymore,” lamented one insider, who noted that, without automatic slots to fill, distributors are having to find individual partners for the first pay #TV window for each individual #film. “They almost need to seek reassurance that they can get a pay one deal, so that challenges how quickly they can respond or commit to a number.” Scott Shooman, head of AMC Networks film group that includes IFC Films, said that “the regularity of certain audiences’ filmgoing is still yet to return to pre-COVID levels,” and noted that one of the factors affecting the U.S. sales of prestige dramas comes down to the evolution of “how audiences connect with material on a prestige drama front.” The executive, who is currently attending the Marché du Film - Festival de Cannes, said the company still occasionally pre-buys prestige dramas, but is always taking into consideration “the floor and the ceiling of execution” on each acquisition. Prestige dramas often have a high floor and low ceiling, he claimed, whereas there’s more of an opportunity for a “runaway success” with something more genre-friendly. Take the recent release “Late Night With the Devil,” which grossed an impressive $10 million at the box office despite its low budget and lack of big-name talent. “If you look at the world of prestige drama, there’s not many at $10 million. I think there’s quite a few at [$5 million], but no one’s really getting to that $10 million number,” the executive said. #streaming #tv #cinema

I watched #RHTDM in an almost packed theater & realized film industry is actually replicating a social media calendar strategy- repurposing & reposting content. The makers are making money, the advertisers are maximizing on in-cinema advertising and the theater chains like #PVR #INOX and #CINEPOLIS are getting a respite from empty auditoriums. But.... Is this re-release strategy meant to care and cater to audience's nostalgia or is there something more to it? Is it just meant to make easy-money or are the makers putting in effort in #filmrestoration and #4Kremastering of these old prints for modern day theatrical experience? Read on! If you haven't had the chance, I would highly encourage you to watch this session. It's super refreshing to hear unfiltered/ungated opinions on the state of the industry (in today's context) from fellow #producers. Transactional, relationships, and trust are some of the keywords to pick up here. I appreciate and can relate to Khalil Bachooali's insights on the different topics of discussion! #creative #producing

One win to rule them all! The recent triumph of Payal Kapadia’s “All We Imagine as Light” at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival is a remarkable moment for the OTT industry. This historic win, the first for an Indian film in 30 years, is not just a victory but a recognition of Indian film industry, the talent it fosters, and independent filmmakers. Impact on OTT Platforms OTT platforms have already made quite an impact by with regional movies. Analysts even claim that regional movies have been reigning supreme over Bollywood. The success of “Pushpa” and “RRR” are a testament to that. The OTT markets is US $4.06 bn but with encouraging successes like this, the projected US $5.81 could be reached sooner than 2029. Regional OTTs While all regional channels offer an OTT subscription (Sun Nxt, Hotstar, Hoichoi and more), all of them have not broken even on their offerings. They are now in a unique position to leverage this success. The ability to cater to a global audience with regional content that can resonate with them is no longer a possibility but a reality. Regional content Accolades to Indian content will now put a global spotlight on it. There will be more buyers for it at MIPCOM, VIDCON and other Media and Entertainment markets for content. It is a boost not to independent film makers but the whole industry. It underscores the potential of regional films to make an international impact. Are you watching more regional content that you did than 2 years ago? What is your favourite regional content? Even after getting the necessary approval from Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), the movie was being asked to take down from Netflix. With the Draft Broadcasting Bill, 2023, which brings various broadcasting services—including OTT services like Netflix, Amazon Prime Disney+ Hotstar —under Government raider; which also means that the Government will have legal powers to take action against content that may not align with their policies, interests, or if it simply goes against their desired public narrative. #dslegal #medialaw #copyright #netflix #disneyhotstar #amazonprime #entertainmentlaw #ott #broadcasting #censorship #legalinsights https://lnkd.in/gXnAqJyk
