A Morning Meeting with YKids
This morning, I had the privilege of meeting with Louisa Jones and Claire Morgans from Ykids Limited to discuss the Digital Inclusion Grant. A heartfelt thank you to both for showing us around and sharing insights into the work YKids does.
For those who might not be familiar, YKids is an amazing organisation that plays a pivotal role in empowering young people. Their work spans a range of initiatives:
Educational Support - Providing learning resources and mentorship to enhance educational outcomes.
Skill Development - Offering workshops and programs focused on life skills, creativity, and technology.
Community Engagement - Creating a supportive environment where young minds can thrive, especially those from challenging backgrounds.
Well-being and Mentorship - Focusing on the mental and physical well-being of children and young adults through various activities and guidance.
In addition to their educational and skill development initiatives, YKids also addresses a critical issue - food insecurity.
Attached is a photo of the YKids food pantry. It's a stark reminder of the ongoing needs within our community. Unfortunately, this pantry is likely to be EMPTY by TOMORROW, highlighting the urgent need for support.
I encourage everyone in our network to consider donating to or supporting YKids in any way possible. Your contribution can make a substantial difference in the lives of many young people and their families.
Together, we can help ensure that organisations like YKids continue to make a positive impact in our communities.

🚀 Support Us in Raising an Empathy-Educated Generation! 🚀
Imagine a future where empathy drives decisions in every boardroom, classroom, and community. Where understanding and connection aren't just ideals, but the foundation of our society. At EmpathyLab, our small team, made mighty by our nationwide partnerships, are on a mission to raise an empathy-educated generation, and we need your help.
🌱 Research shows that we are only born with 10% of our empathetic ability. The rest must be learnt. By placing empathy at the heart of education, children develop key empathy skills; learn to name and share their feelings; develop deep listening skills and understand other people’s feelings and perspectives.
📚 How We Make a Difference:
Reading for Empathy: We harness the power of diverse, empathy-rich books to develop children’s understanding of other people’s feelings and perspectives.
Educational Partnerships: We collaborate with schools to embed empathy into their curriculums. Our resources, tailored for lessons, assemblies, and libraries, support educators in this vital mission.
Empathy Day: Books inspire children, and who better to role-model empathy than authors themselves? On Empathy Day, we involve children in author-led activities to inspire them to put empathy into action.
🌟 Support our Mission:
Together, we can raise a generation that acts with empathy and understands its power to drive social change. Your support can make a world of difference.
We're asking anyone who is able, to donate to our crowdfunder, to enable our small but mighty team to give 100,000 more children empathy education experiences in the next year. To say thank you, we’re offering exciting rewards to donors.

It's approaching the time of year when many businesses start planning their CSR for 2025. Is anyone in my network able to nominate the Isle of Man Imagination Library to help us bring Dolly Parton's Imagination Library to the Isle of Man? ❤️ 🌟
The Imagination Library posts a free, high-quality book to children every month from birth until their fifth birthday, regardless of their family's income. A child enrolled from birth will build their own home library of 60 books. 📚📚
Inspired by her father’s inability to read or write, Dolly Parton started her Imagination Library in 1995 for the children within her home county, in East Tennessee. It is expanded into new areas by a local partner who raises the funds to cover the cost of the books, postage, and packaging. Every £26 raised provides £143 worth of books and services for local children - thanks to the incredible economies of scale from The Dollywood Foundation. ✨
With the convenience of free books delivered to their door, caregivers are gently nudged to engage in the magical world of storytelling with their child. Studies show that the Imagination Library creates a long-term return on investment, improves educational outcomes, and strengthens family and community bonds. 👨👩👧 👨👨👧 👩👦👦 👨👧 👪
It has all the things I love; nudge theory, creating social bonds, preschool education's incredible return on investment AND it's a bargain 🤑
We need to raise £59,000 before opening registrations - that will cover 65% of under 5s for a year and would deliver 27,230 books into the hands of Manx children. 📚📚📚📚📚📚📚
So if your company is thinking about its CSR strategy, could you help us bring this incredible programme to Manx children? Perhaps you could 'sponsor' an area? Bride is £208 a year, Santon is £1066 or every under 5 in Douglas could get a book each month for a year for just under £30k. 🥰
Please tag or message me if you'd like more info, or visit our website https://lnkd.in/ejGaAGPM You can also donate anonymously via our site (which I love from a 'not holding personal data' perspective and hate from a 'I want to know who to thank' perspective). 🙈
Let’s get some books! 📚🤞 Thanks!😊

We funded BS3 Community Development though our Digital Inclusion Fund to support them in helping older people to become more digitally connected through their Connect with Ease courses.
These courses are co-designed with attendees to cover topics that matter to them. Attendees join the sessions to learn and improve their confidence for a variety of reasons:
“My wife is chatting every day on WhatsApp with the kids and grandkids, and she knows how to send emails – I feel left behind."
“Everyone wants an email, but I don’t know what it is, and I’m scared to get one."
“My doctors are now online, and I don’t know how to make an appointment."
Thanks to these courses, BS3 Community Development are helping older people become more confident and digitally connected. One attendee said “I feel relieved, I now have an email that works. I cannot tell you how helpful this support has been. Thank you BS3 for running this project."

When he started Year 10, Marco was often distracted at school, meaning that he didn’t always pay attention in class, leaving him feeling frustrated and angry. He had given up on himself and his education and had no aspirations or hope for his future.
Like Marco, around 30% of children in the UK - 9 in an average school class of 30, or 4.2 million in total - are growing up in poverty, in households earning less than £400 per week, putting them at high risk of having mental health struggles, and five times more likely than their peers to experience poor educational outcomes. Long-term, this leads to a lack of confidence, low aspirations, and ultimately unemployment - with these children being 50% more unlikely to transition into further education, employment or training when leaving school as young people at the age of 18.
But it doesn't have to be this way.
At City Year UK we’re working tirelessly to ensure that the next generation - our future leaders - are equipped to succeed and thrive in school, employment and life, no matter what their background or circumstances.
We do this by placing volunteers, aged 18-25, into schools across Greater Manchester, West Midlands and London to act as Mentors to children who are struggling. These Mentors give the children the support they need to thrive socially, emotionally and academically, while they themselves build the skills, resources and networks needed to pursue a fulfilling future.
This year, we are celebrating our 15 year anniversary. And we are doing this with a pledge to reach over 21,500 children and young people by August 2027.
But we can’t do this alone. Help us reach more young people and give them the chance to realise their full potential.
Please make a donation today and share with your network so that more young people like Marco can look forward to more hopeful futures: cityyear.org.uk/donate
Thank you for your support! 🙏🌱🌟

There are many wonderful non-profits that help kids with reading! Here are a few examples:
1. Reading Is Fundamental (RIF): Provides free books and literacy resources to children in need.
2. Reading Partners: Offers one-on-one reading tutoring to elementary school students.
3. Book Trust: Gives books to low-income children to build their home libraries.
4. Literacy Inc. (LINC): Supports literacy development in young children through community-based programs.
5. Page Ahead Children's Literacy Program: Provides new books to children in need, especially in rural and underserved communities.
6. First Book: Distributes new books and educational resources to schools and programs serving low-income children.
7. Bernie's Book Bank: Collects and distributes gently used children's books to those in need.
8. Reach Out and Read: Incorporates reading into pediatric care, promoting early literacy development.
These are just a few examples of organizations working to improve children's literacy. You can search for non-profits in your local area or consider volunteering or donating to support their important work!
Today, I had the privilege of meeting with Linda Cohen of Read With Me to explore how the BiGDUG team can help improve children's literacy in Gloucestershire and beyond. It's easy to feel overwhelmed by the challenges facing our children and educators, but ignoring these issues is not the solution.
Imagine the workforce in 5 years, where a significant number of young workers struggle to read at an adequate level. This limitation leads to poor communication skills, frustration, and anger – not ideal qualities for any workplace. Supporting children to read is not just a local effort; it's a national imperative with far-reaching impacts on businesses and society.
Business leaders, I challenge you to step up and support your local schools. Beyond monetary or material donations, genuine partnerships and encouraging employees to volunteer their time to read in schools can make a tangible difference. Just one hour a week can change a child's life and shape a brighter future for all.
