🕯️ Candle lovers - not gonna lie, I geeked out a little when Julia Waldow of Modern Retail got in touch to source insights from Nikki Baird of Aptos Retail to address the importance of brick-and-mortar retail re: store expansion moves by Voluspa, my favorite candle company. 🏫 I had no idea Voluspa has been around since I was age 7 (I'm 32). It goes to show the road to brick-and-mortar expansion for some #DTC brands is quite (strategically) delayed after a long stint of selling solely via wholesale and eCom distribution channels. 🤝 When the timing is right, B&M is a key move to understanding and serving your customers more intimately. This recent DTC era of the brand (its 1st storefront est. 2019) has had to be such a fun and rewarding experience - to finally host fans for immersive 1st-party interactions at shops they call home. 👇 Full story link, below. #firstpartydata #retail #retailers #stores #storefronts #storeopenings #fragrance #brickandmortar #retailtech #CX #customerdata #consumers
🕯️ This past weekend, the luxury candle brand Voluspa opened a new flagship store in Southern California. The move is the latest step in the brand's plan to build out its DTC business. Voluspa, which launched in 1999, conducts the majority of its business via wholesale through accounts such as Nordstrom, Anthropologie and Bloomingdale’s. It's also available in hundreds of boutiques and sells via its own website. Now, with sales at an "all-time high," Voluspa is looking to open more of its owned stores. As part of this, Voluspa will be opening a second location in Brea, California next year and a third location sometime before the end of 2025. “We really look at DTC as a way to elevate our brand and help our customer understand the brand and be inspired by it,” founder Troy Arntsen told me. The channel, he said, has tripled in size since 2019. New for Modern Retail, featuring great insights from Troy and Nikki Baird:

Consolidation of the department store retail sector continues. This round at the premium level. Expect continued overall declines in a retail segment that is in dire need of real transformation to remain relevant long term. More of the same won’t cut it. #retail #departmentstores #wholesale #ecommerce

Foot Locker's newly redesigned store doesn’t solve all of its problems, but it is a very good start at remedying some of the ills that have plagued the brand. Most of the estate looks tired and shops are not conducive to driving sales as they are too functional and don’t always allow Foot Locker to showcase product effectively. This deters customers, especially younger ones who like modern and exciting environments. However, it is also a turn-off for brands like Nike which are conscious about how their products are displayed. The refresh also brings Foot Locker into line with other retailers. The bar for store design has been set far higher thanks to companies like Lululemon or Vuori, and even Dick’s is investing more in its stores – especially the new House of Sport locations. Its commitment to updating 900 shops shows that Foot Locker does not want to be left behind. In my view, the plans will also help CEO Mary Dillon, as they are solid evidence to investors that things are changing. Foot Locker has had a string of very bad numbers so Wall Street is now keen to see signs of material change. However, new stores also need to be accompanied by better sales numbers. This might be more difficult to deliver quickly in a sneaker market that is still very soft and where several brands are still trying to push direct to consumer sales. Thanks to Insider Retail for including more of my thoughts in this piece... https://lnkd.in/eYNiB5vM #retail #retailnews #sneakers #stores #design #sportinggoods

“Instead of going after a department store, let’s do something that’s more fun and more interesting and that will drive a lot of traffic.” The quote pretty much sums up the state of the US #DepartmentStore sector (it’s not quite as bleak outside the US, where many department stores still have, well, “departments” beyond apparel, footwear, accessories, fragrance, beauty, and home). For those wanting a bit more (or for those who are paywalled), read on. The Wall Street Journal pulls no punches. “Department stores are bleeding customers, and landlords no longer view them as magnets for shoppers. Discounters are underpricing them. Specialty stores are outmaneuvering them. And luxury brands are sometimes bypassing department stores to open their own shops. The surviving operators are making big moves in hopes of turning things around. Saks Fifth Avenue’s parent company is buying rival Neiman Marcus. Nordstrom executives are exploring taking the company private. Macy’s new chief executive is closing stores while trying to improve the shopping experience at its leaner fleet. But department stores’ long-term decline will be difficult to reverse. Their sales peaked just before the turn of the century and have been on a downward trajectory ever since, according to U.S. census data. ‘Young customers aren’t shopping at malls and they aren’t shopping department stores in the same way they used to,’ said Stenn Parton, Prism’s chief executive. “ https://lnkd.in/grjfc33W
