For many of these kids, school lunch is their only meal of the day, yet the current funding of $4.43 per meal is simply not enough to provide the nutritious food they need to thrive. That’s why I’m participating in the $5 Boost Campaign—a mission to raise funds for HydroTowers and Independence Gardens' cooking program, Come and EAT IT. We have: Donated over 4.5 million pounds of chicken to more than 100 organizations across Chicagoland. Rescued tens of thousands of pounds of produce, day-old bakery goods and the like that would have ended up in landfills or composts. Distributed over 30,000 nutritionally designed meals and hundreds of personal care packs to needy students. Assisted hundreds of seniors to access food from local food pantries. Every Spring and Fall through our Poultry to Pantries Delivery Day we donate 120,000+ pounds (over 240,000 pounds per year) of nutritious protein to organizations in every corner of Chicagoland. Before working with SA Harvest I had no clue the degree to which food was being wasted in our country. I mean, in my household I’m quite a stickler for wasting food - my kids can attest to this 🥴 On average, 10 million tons of good food is dumped into landfills annually by farmers, retailers, manufacturers and so on. Food that didn’t make the quality grade, food that’s been over produced, etc. Good food going to waste. On average, 20 million people in SA go hungry every single day. 20 million people live below the food security line and most of them are kids and the elderly 🥹 On its own, these stats are profound, however, if the 10 tons of food can be rescued, it would exceed feeding those 20 million starving South Africans with 3 nutritious meals a day for more than a year 🤯 imagine that, and end to hunger in SA 🙌 I call on all my corporate mates to help organisations like SA Harvest not only this time by donating #bucketsofnutrition for #mandelamonth but to consider how you help them do this sustainably. To help restore the dignity of our people so that our kids may thrive and that we rebuild a nation where not a single South African will ever be hungry again. It's getting hotter, and for many who are living on the streets, survival is a constant struggle. Inside our walls, we try our best to make AHCH a small haven of relief and provide simple pleasures such as hot coffee, sugar and creamer, and small snacks like cup-o-noodles, protein bars, chips, and popcorn. On outreach, there is an acute need for bottles of water, nutrient-dense bars, and electrolyte drinks. This is why we need your help to provide the basic resources that make AHCH a warm and welcoming place for people to come to.
