Redistributing food waste to ensure food safety for the food vulnerable.

About us

We rescue surplus food that would otherwise have gone to landfills. SA Harvest collects quality surplus food in refrigerated vehicles from a variety of sources and delivers it, direct, without delay and free of charge, to a variety of organisations that feed food vulnerable people on a daily basis. Even though we work closely with any organisation that rescues food and fights to reduce waste, one of our most important points of difference is that, because our business model enables us to deliver PERISHABLE as well as NON-PERISHABLE food, our recipient organisations get a sufficient variety of food-types enabling them to make full and nourishing meals for their people. The work we do has a four-fold impact. 1. Quality food for organisations that feed the food-vulnerable – the food that we deliver is nutritionally diverse and enables our recipient organisations to provide wholesome and nutritious meals to the people they support. 2. Savings for charities – our food deliveries to charitable organisations enable them to redirect vital funding into education, rehabilitation and other programmes. Charities are also able to save money on the transport costs they would have incurred if they had to do their own pick-ups from food donors. 3. Helping the environment – When good food goes to waste it decays in landfills and creates harmful methane gases that damage our atmosphere. By ensuring that good food is eaten rather than going to landfill, SA HARVEST is helping protect our environment by preventing tons of greenhouse gas emissions from polluting the atmosphere. 4. Savings for food donors – our food donors benefit from reduced expenditure associated with the disposal of excess food, reduced food storage costs and the satisfaction of knowing they are making a valuable contribution to those in need in their local community.

💛 A heartfelt thanks to Spargs for supporting local communities! 💛 Today, we extend our gratitude to Spargs in Mthatha’s CBD for their generous contribution of 1,400kg of maize meal. This donation brought vital nourishment to families facing food insecurity in the region. This maize meal was sent to two incredible community organisations: Acts of Foundation and PowerhouseSYN. Acts of Foundation provides essential services, like emergency shelter and food for those in need, while PowerhouseSYN is dedicated to empowering youth and women, offering access to healthcare and education. Thank you, spargs buildit mthatha, for your commitment to uplifting Mthatha and surrounding communities. Together, we’re fighting hunger. 💪🌍 Follow us to see more stories of hope and partnerships that make a difference! #SAHarvest #SpargsDonation #CommunitySupport #FightAgainstHunger #FoodInsecurity

Happy birthday to ESKORT ! What better way to celebrate turning 107 than by giving back - and in this case it was 107 delicious (and somewhat unusual) birthday cakes made with Eskort streaky bacon and pork sausages. Our Cape Town beneficiaries loved them! Thank you to this amazing company for making us part of your celebration - and congratulations on winning a #OrchidsandOnions award for this unusually delicious campaign! #saharvest #UnionAgainstHunger

Eskort Honoured with an Orchid for Our 107-Campaign! We are thrilled to share that our 107-campaign has been honoured with an Orchid by Brendan Seery in his renowned Orchids and Onions column on Bizcommunity. As Brendan so perfectly put it: “Sometimes, you don’t need a big-bang, mega-bucks TV ad to get across your brand message. Sometimes, all it takes is some out-of-the-box thinking.” That’s exactly what we did! To celebrate 107 years of delivering premium, antibiotic-free pork to South Africa, we teamed up with the creative minds at Studio H to craft 107 cakes made entirely from sausages and bacon. These unique edible creations weren’t just for display—they were distributed via SA Harvest to Salt River High School and the 123 Movement, contributing to the fight against hunger and making a real difference in our communities. Brendan summed it up great: “The campaign shows how clever PR and events can pack a highly cost-effective marketing punch.” We could not be more proud of this acknowledgment. It reflects the power of collaboration and purpose-driven initiatives to make a lasting impact. A heartfelt thank you to everyone involved in bringing this bold idea to life - and to Brendan for this wonderful recognition. The full article can be viewed here: https://bit.ly/3AkpkMo                         However, 107-campaign didn’t stop at sausage cakes - it featured a number of initiatives that added even more meaning to the number 107 like: A sizzling 107-second Bacon ASMR video that can be viewed on YouTube. A 107-minute in-store event at Eskort Meadowdale that took place on 10 October. 107 exclusive gift drops made to iconic South Africans who resonate with our story of legacy and longevity. A 107-character social media competition where fans have shared their first memory of Eskort to stand a chance to win one of 107 Eskort Store vouchers! 107 voices video on YouTube providing a behind-the-scenes experience from our annual choir competition, highlighting the performers, the judges, and the heartfelt emotions that go into it.

SOUND ON 📢: Tzu Chi Foundation South Africa regularly gives us mountains of rice, which we send across the country to our beneficiary organisations. Rather than taking our word for how grateful our communities are for the nourishment of this staple food, which gives calories from carbohydrates, we asked three of our wonderful beneficiary organisation to give us the lowdown! Thank you also to the men of Lavender Hill and Guardians of the National Treasure for helping once again to offload a full container of rice 🍚. #harvestingheroes #UnionAgainstHunger #saharvest #donorappreciation

Whether we're collecting bread, delivering apples, harvesting cabbages or dropping off buckets filled with nutritious ingredients, the wheels of our trucks keep turning thanks to bp Southern Africa. Thanks to a partnership that began in July 2022, our trucks have been fuelled by bp's generosity and commitment to the bp group sustainability goals - to reduce methane, sustain livelihoods and enhance wellbeing. It's a partnership that helped us deliver over 15 million meals in 2023 and over 13,6 million meals to date in 2024. Through bp's contribution to our mission to end hunger, over 7 million kilograms of perfectly good food has been prevented from becoming food waste, from rotting in landfill where it would have resulted in millions of kilograms of methane emissions, a greenhouse gas even more potent than carbon dioxide. #saharvest #UnionAgainstHunger #BP

How many ways can you cook a sweet potato (patat)? One of our Cape Town beneficiaries has a few ideas 😂. Thanks to the generosity and compassion of Dutoit Agri, it's been raining sweet potatoes for weeks in our Cape Town, Joburg and Durban warehouses. Thousands upon thousands of people have been fed. Stews, soups and curries have been made and hungry bodies have been nourished with all the carbohydrates, fibre, vitamins and minerals in these delicious root veggies. Thank you to the Dutoit Group family and team, and to our logistics partners The Road Freight Association, FWJ Logistix, CHEP and DSV - Global Transport and Logistics, for making this story of food rescue and hunger relief possible. #gratitude #thanks #foodrescue #saharvest #UnionAgainstHunger
