Economic rights and investments are vital for women and non-binary folks from marginalized communities as they foster autonomy, break cycles of systemic harm and vulnerable conditions, improve social and health outcomes, reduce gender inequality, increase participation in decision-making—and ultimately strengthen vibrant communities. When we come together to acknowledge the ever-expanding web of interconnected struggles women face in their pursuit of economic freedom within the current systems and context, we begin to grasp the complex ways in which class, gender, nationality, privilege, and ability are intertwined. Hence, we must move beyond these categories to understand the interrelationships of ideas and processes that may seem separate and unrelated. This, along with our commitment to creating more opportunities, is one of the fundamental reasons we fought so hard to keep one of our core programs alive for our serving communities. Since 2020, we have delivered five full cohorts of The Change Make-Her Program at GOOD TO BE GOOD. Read our latest report, which maps our feminist-driven methods, outcomes, insights, and learnings from the limits of practical realization in community service. Discover what it takes to meaningfully support and bolster women pursuing economic independence/mobility without traditional entrepreneurial means. "What is the social economy, and why does it matter? Social Economy it's a fascinating landscape where businesses prioritize not just profit, but also people and the planet. 😊🌎 But… why does the social economy matter? Let's break it down: 1. Job Creation: Social enterprises and cooperatives create sustainable jobs, often in marginalized or underserved communities. By focusing on social impact, they contribute to economic development while addressing unemployment and income inequality. 2. Inclusion: One of the core values of the social economy is inclusivity. These businesses provide opportunities for individuals who may face barriers to employment, including women, those with disabilities, or limited access to education and resources. By promoting gender equality and diversity, they foster a more equitable society, where everyone has the chance to thrive. 3. Social Change: Beyond financial success, social enterprises strive to make a difference in the world. Whether it's addressing environmental issues, supporting vulnerable populations, or promoting fair trade practices, they tackle pressing social challenges head-on. We take pride in affirming that SCALEUP is deeply rooted in both the social economy and fostering female participation in business. Of Women, By Women & For women Supporting Self-Help Groups (SHGs) by fostering linkages, community engagement, resource management, and training for upskilling. Creating women-centric spaces, such as SHGs and mahila mandals, serves as a bridge for financial inclusion and to overcome the challenge of women's limited participation in the public sphere, extending beyond the vicinity of their households. A short explainer on the role SHGs play in urban areas: SHGs play a vital role in addressing socio-economic challenges, with a focus on various activities, including skill development, women's empowerment, and entrepreneurship. Aligning with Delhi’s urban landscape and the demand for diverse skill sets, SHGs often collaborate with local authorities, NGOs, and businesses to provide training and support for members to engage in income-generating activities. Moreover, SHGs contribute to community development by addressing issues such as social disparities. Thus acting as platforms for collective decision-making, mutual support, and awareness campaigns. Challenges in forming SHGs and regular engagement include cultural differences resulting in a lack of trust, issues specific to the migrant population, unsustainable business models with low returns, non-context-specific skilling, conventional job opportunities, illiteracy among women, and hurdles related to the distance of work.

Monitoring & Evaluation Expert |Helping NGOs and Organizations Prove Impact, Secure Funding, and Drive Results with Data-Driven Monitoring & Evaluation
Gender-Responsive M&E: Are You Measuring What Truly Matters? While working on a community development project, I saw how traditional M&E frameworks were failing to capture the true impact on women and girls. The program was making strides, but the data didn’t reflect the unique challenges and successes of different genders. The indicators weren’t aligned with gender-specific outcomes, leaving a critical gap in understanding the real impact. Without gender-responsive M&E, the program couldn’t fully assess how resources were affecting women and men differently. Important insights were being missed, which meant they couldn’t adjust their strategies to ensure equity. At one point, the program was almost seen as ineffective because the evaluation didn’t show the full picture of progress—especially for the women it aimed to empower. We restructured the M&E approach to be gender-responsive, adding indicators that specifically tracked how the program impacted men, women, boys, and girls. This included qualitative data, like women’s voices on how the program improved their economic opportunities and leadership roles. The results were eye-opening! Not only did the organization gain a clearer understanding of its impact, but it also built stronger strategies that better served women and girls. Funders and stakeholders saw this as a commitment to gender equity and the program’s credibility grew. Are you integrating gender-responsive M&E in your projects? follow me, Sylvia Murungaru to learn how to ensure your M&E frameworks measure what truly matters for everyone. What’s your experience with gender-responsive M&E? Let’s share insights in the comments below! #MonitoringAndEvaluation #GenderResponsiveM&E #MeasuringImpact #ProgramImprovement #SylviaMurungaru #GenderEquity

TAKE TIME TO READ CAREFULLY PLEASE!!!!! Equality vs. Equity: Understanding the Difference When discussing social justice and fairness, the terms "equality" and "equity" are often used interchangeably, but they represent distinct concepts with significant implications. Understanding the difference between these two ideas is crucial for addressing systemic inequalities and fostering a more just society. Equality refers to the state of being equal, especially in status, rights, and opportunities. It embodies the principle of treating everyone the same regardless of their individual circumstances or needs. In essence, equality aims to ensure that everyone has access to the same resources and opportunities without discrimination. On the other hand, equity involves recognizing and addressing the diverse needs of individuals to ensure fair outcomes. It acknowledges that people start from different positions and may require different levels of support to achieve comparable results. Equity seeks to level the playing field by providing tailored resources and assistance to those who need it most, ultimately striving for fairness and justice. To illustrate the difference between equality and equity, consider the metaphor of a fence. In a scenario of equality, everyone is given the same size box to stand on to see over a tall fence. However, this approach overlooks the fact that some individuals may already be tall enough to see over the fence without a box, while others may still struggle to have a clear view even with the box. In contrast, equity involves providing varying box sizes or alternative viewing options based on each person's unique needs, ensuring that everyone has an unobstructed view. In practical terms, achieving equality often requires addressing systemic barriers and discriminatory practices that hinder equal access to opportunities. Meanwhile, pursuing equity involves actively identifying and mitigating disparities in resources and support to create conditions where all individuals can thrive. In summary, while equality focuses on sameness and uniform treatment, equity centers on fairness and tailored support based on individual circumstances. Both concepts are essential in promoting justice and inclusivity, but understanding their distinctions is crucial for effectively addressing societal inequalities. As we navigate discussions around social justice and fairness, recognizing the nuances between these concepts is vital for creating meaningful change in our communities.
