#DEI is more than a buzzword. Embracing diversity, equity and inclusion isn't a one-time effort but an ongoing commitment❕ Mitigating bias is pivotal. Strategies to challenge ingrained attitudes and behaviours, coupled with accountability, ensure progress. DEI isn't a passing trend; it's a foundational principle for ethical and sustainable society 💗 Also beyond organisational walls, we must play a role in advocating for legislative changes that uphold minority interests. Our team member participated in the The Greens/EFA in the European Parliament's #EUFFP event that highlighted that we, who can, must align our efforts with inclusivity. As Hannah Neumann, MEP, stated, providing platforms for underrepresented voices is crucial and our responsibility. This year I've had a record number of Women of Colour (WoC) contacting me asking for advice on speaker fees and speakership in general. It's great that WoC are being asked to speak at IWD events, however, are you paying your speakers? If not what's the whole point of IWD? *mind blown* I say this not only for WoC but for all women and people who are being asked to share their story, MC or sit on a panel as part of a IWD event. As someone who has run all kinds of events for over 20 years (inclusion and non inclusion related), I understand the challenges for event organisers and even though I myself am a speaker, as an event organiser (and imperfect human living in an imperfect world) I have made mistakes - so I get it, and I know this is a journey. As an inclusion practitioner, the irony of not paying speakers for an IWD event is something that gives me a physical migraine. Intersectionality refers to how the different aspects of our identity are connected and how this is linked to inequalities or privileges. Last week our annual Employee Resource Group (ERG) Summit addressed this important topic with representatives from the ERGs and UCB leaders, including our CEO, Jean-Christophe Tellier, and ExCom member Denelle Waynick Johnson. Guests and attendees participated in person and online and were invited to reflect on different questions: 👥 How do the different aspects of our identity influence our personal experiences? How do they affect our lives and our professional path? 🤝 What is the role of allies in addressing inequalities? ⚖ How can we all be more inclusive and equitable in our approach to diversity? 👩🏾🤝👩🏼 How can understanding intersectionality benefit the people we work with and the patients we serve? Exploring this topic helps us to better address inequalities, individually and collectively. Diversity and inclusion initiatives - we've heard about them, we've discussed them, but why are they not as popular as they should be? 🤔 Here are three thought-provoking ideas: 1️⃣ Change can be uncomfortable, but it's necessary.
