Leadership Thoughts for Pride Month There has been a lot of backlash lately about a Navy Special Warfare Command (i.e., SEALs) Facebook post that featured the words, "NSW DIGNITY SERVICE RESPECT EQUALITY PRIDE" on a rainbow flag. Considering the "team" mentality of NSWG, I am surprised that the current NSWG leadership endorses this approach. The problem with this post is not the Navy's position on LGBTQIA+ sailors, but rather, it the the fact that we recognize them as a distinct group. This flies in the face of every aspect of our military and Navy training. We are taught and trained to look past our differences and focus on our mission. We function best as a team, not as individuals. We seek values that unite us, not divide us. HONOR. COURAGE. COMMITMENT. Those are the Navy's core values and our focus. We must not divide ourselves by heritage, education, politics, race, religion, or sexual orientation. Celebrating any grouping of servicemembers is divisive and only serves to weaken our team. ⚓📘Mini- Review: Surf When You Can by Captain (Navy) Brett Crozier. I couldn’t put this book down! If you are in search of an engaging and insightful read about naval operations, especially concerning blue water maneuvers, “Surf When You Can” is an excellent choice. The author, a Senior Navy Officer, recounts his life journey from childhood to his final moments using the ship’s brow after successfully leading over 1,200 Sailors onboard the USS Theodore Roosevelt. Despite his achievements, Navy Captain Crozier candidly acknowledges his shortcomings as a Commanding Officer, particularly in addressing the fallout from COVID-19, which ultimately cost him his job. In each chapter, he introduces various concepts to help readers understand his experiences and emphasizes how these can be applied as leadership skills. Additionally, he offers valuable insights for future fighter pilots. Stay tuned for my full review, but in the meantime, I highly recommend this book to those aspiring to become the Chief of the Naval Staff. 🦅

After a field trip in the 7th grade to the Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland, she knew she wanted to join the Navy. Jennifer didn’t know what she would do in the Navy, but she wanted to be like the sailors she met—smart, athletic, well-spoken, and confident. Fast forward to today, Rear Admiral Jennifer Couture is one of the top-ranking women in the U.S. military. She is the Commander of Carrier Strike Group ELEVEN, based in Everett, Washington. It’s a collection of ships and aircraft with thousands of sailors and marines that can deploy serious firepower at any time, anywhere in the world. Only four other women in the history of the Navy have had Carrier Strike Group command.
