HAPPY WORLD BEE DAY 2024 World Bee Day is an annual awareness day for the essential role bees and other pollinators play in keeping people and the planet healthy. Bees are increasingly under threat from human lifestyles; the 2 main causes of depletion being use of pesticides on crops and habitat loss from urban development and intensive farming. Climate change is also applying pressure, as bees are struggling to cope with weather extremes. 75% of the worlds food crops are dependent on pollination and so something needs to be done. What can we do as individuals? - Buy raw honey from local sources - Avoid pesticides in our gardens - Plant a diverse set if native plants which flower at different times of the year - Treat tired bees to sugar water - Keep some weeds - Help to spread awareness Special shout out to Ellis Haslam, Harringtons Builders PLC and the rest of the team in Stevenage for creating planters through up-cycling old pallets, to create a vegetable patch and flower patches to support the bees. You can see how much they're enjoyed below 😀 🐝 🌸

United Nations has consciously designated 20th May as the #worldbeeday to put light on importance of #pollinators 🐝 Pollinators such as the beautiful butterflies, bats, hummingbirds, and bees are under huge human threat. To overcome this, UN’s “Bee Engaged with Youth” campaign was started, to encourage young people & adults in beekeeping and pollinator conservation efforts. In 2024, the campaign strongly focuses on - 🦋Biodiversity preservation | 🌾Agriculture | Ecological Balance🌍 How can WE make a difference?🤔 👉🏻By purchasing organic honey from local vendors, 👉🏻avoiding pesticides and other harmful chemicals for farming 👉🏻donating for bee hives 👉🏻raising awareness amongst close friends & family 👉🏻leaving water bowls for bees and other pollinators By doing our bit, we shall celebrate “WorldBeeDay” together & Bee Engaged with Youth for a Better Future.😇💫 #worldbeeday #bee #pollination #unitednations #sustainabledevelopment #butterflies #hummingbird #savebees #organichoney #honeyproduction #organic #unsdg

🐝 World Bee Day 20 May 🐝 Theme for 2024: "Bee engaged with Youth." 🐝Pollination is, however, a fundamental process for the survival of our ecosystems. Nearly 90% of the world’s wild flowering plant species depend, entirely, or at least in part, on animal pollination, along with more than 75% of the world’s food crops and 35% of global agricultural land. Not only do pollinators contribute directly to food security, but they are key to conserving biodiversity. 🐝 The goal is to strengthen measures aimed at protecting bees and other pollinators, which would significantly contribute to solving problems related to the global food supply and eliminate hunger in developing countries. #World bee day #Sknau #ICAR #RARI #Nature #Ecofriendly #insect #Pollination #Food #Honey #20May

World Bee Day is celebrated on May 20. On this day Anton Janša, the pioneer of beekeeping, was baptized in 1734. World Bee Day celebrates our hard-working little pollinators. Bees are important to our livelihood as they help to pollinate most of the crops we eat and many that feed farm animals. But bee populations are under threat. Destruction of their natural habitat, intensive farming practices, and pests and diseases are just some of the complex reasons driving a decline in both the number and diversity of bees. Without bees, our food security is at risk. Our very existence depends on bees and other pollinators. They help improve global food security, provide livelihoods for millions of people, help maintain biodiversity, and are key to achieving the #GlobalGoals. The good news is that we can all help protect bees, support beekeepers, grow native plants, buy raw honey from local farmers, avoid pesticides, and take #ClimateAction

🌻🐝 World Bee Day is back! 🐝🌻 Today, it's a well-known fact that our buzzing friends, the bees, are essential to our planet's survival. They are one of the world's most important pollinators for food crops, and we have them to thank for over 4,000 plant varieties worldwide. Albert Einstein said, "If the bee disappeared… we would only have four years left to live." But there are still many things we can do to help the bees: 🐝 Bee friendly by planting a garden that's bee-friendly. 🐝 Bee mindful by not disturbing bees during their flowering times. 🐝 Bee considering by using pollinator-friendly pesticides 🐝 Bee aware by spreading the importance of bees to our ecosystems.

the Power of Action
From dryland to forest in just 5 years 🌳🤩 Before, the soil was so dry that farmers struggled to grow crops. Thousands of trees and 5 years later, that has changed. Thanks to the support of the Ecosia community, we partnered with Trees for the Future to create forest gardens in Senegal that help farming communities adapt to the effects of climate change. In these gardens, trees grow alongside crops, protecting them, restoring the soil, and cooling temperatures 🌍 This also means that families can harvest more fruits and vegetables, improve their nutrition, and earn higher incomes. 🎥 See more images of this incredible before-and-after and learn more about the project: https://lnkd.in/dDZ6C2DX

This quote underscores the critical importance of bees and other pollinators to the global ecosystem and human survival. It highlights the interconnectedness of all living organisms and the dependence of human civilization on the vital role played by bees in pollination. 🐝 Bees are essential pollinators responsible for fertilizing a significant portion of the world's crops, including many fruits, vegetables, and nuts. Without bees, these plants would be unable to reproduce, leading to a dramatic decline in food production and biodiversity. The disappearance of bees would not only threaten agriculture but also disrupt entire ecosystems, affecting plant and animal populations worldwide. Ultimately, this quote serves as a poignant reminder, especially in light of #WorldBeeDay tomorrow, of the profound impact that bees have on the health of our planet and the precarious balance of the natural world. It emphasises the urgent need to protect and preserve bee populations and their habitats to ensure the continued existence of life as we know it. 🐝🌍 #ProtectTheBees #Honey #Biodiversity

Summer is almost here, and that means it's time to start spending more time with trees! Trees are the unsung heroes of agriculture, providing shade, improving soil health, and creating habitats for beneficial wildlife. Something you might not know about our tree-planting partnership with Trees for the Future is that every tree planted does more than just filter more carbon: they protect the planet, end hunger, and end poverty. Our most recent blog post highlights their work and how planting trees not only helps the planet, but helps change lives too. Check it out!

My Article published in Down To Earth. We have all grown up hearing the story of Krishna and Govardhan. This article aims to uncover the underlying messages for society. The story holds significant value as it mirrors our way of life, our respect for nature, and the management of local natural resources. These common property resources (CPR) ensured security for farmers, economically disadvantaged individuals, women, and others, playing a crucial role in providing ecosystem services. The message stresses the importance of understanding and respecting local resources as essential to our lives. This story remains relevant today, as rural livelihoods continue to rely on agriculture and animal husbandry, much like the community in Brij depended on Govardhan Mountain. Let's take a collective wisdom walk (parikrama) to explore the resources in our village such as pastures, forests, and ponds, and create an Ecological Register to document available resources, trees, plants, uncultivated food, forest produce, herbs, birds, and other wildlife. It's crucial to preserve this collective knowledge for future generations. Any encroached revenue resources or unclaimed potential community forest land should be proposed as an agenda during the upcoming Gram Sabha meeting.
Why ‘Mission Govardhan’ is needed to preserve traditional knowledge on natural resources, protect community forest land

Founder and director of The Green Londoner | Ex-climate diplomat | Sustainability consultant | Championing sustainable living in London
World Ocean Day is around the corner, and although London is not by the coast, our oceans, marine life, and coastal communities across the world are suffering, partly because of the way we eat and consume right here in our city. A topic that has been quite overlooked but deserves more attention and action is fish farming, particularly of carnivorous fish like salmon, sea bream, and sea bass. So, what's the problem? Well, there is now growing evidence of widespread damage caused by fish farming. As stated by Eva Douzinas, President of the US Rauch Foundation and leader of the Seas of Change campaign, who spoke on BBC World News this morning (link below), we are witnessing the destruction of sea meadows, ecosystems, local fisheries, and livelihoods from the world’s fastest-growing food industry. Over 160 NGOs, think tanks, and scientists from six continents have called in an open letter for the United Nations Food & Agriculture Organisation (FAO) to remove carnivorous fish farms from their definition of 'sustainable aquaculture', citing overwhelming evidence of harm to the environment, society, and economy. Two striking figures: • According to the industry, it takes 1.2 kg of wild fish to produce 1 kg of farmed fish (insane, right?) with terrible associated impacts on communities that rely on these resources. • 75% of salmon consumed internationally (according to the FAO) are farmed (remember that salmon in your California maki last weekend? It was very likely farmed). What can we do about it? There are solutions to limit the expansion of this industry by first reducing demand, calling for clearer and more stringent regulations regarding 'sustainable fish farming', and adopting more sustainable choices like looking for labels or visiting restaurants partnered with the Off the Table campaign, which do not serve farmed fish on their menus. You can also explore alternatives like wild fish (yes, it is more expensive and can contribute to over-fishing), lower environmental impact seafood like oysters, mussels, or algae, and why not try plant-based seafood (I haven’t tried it myself). Also, I recommend watching the documentary 'Until the End of the World' by filmmaker Francesco De Augustinis, who methodically exposes the negative impacts of this industry across the world in a clear, rigorous, and informative way. Last but not least, thank you to the London-based agency Curious PR, Hannah Kapff and Maddy Lowe, for their involvement in communicating and raising awareness on this important issue.
