Congratulations to our 2023-2024 Environmental Impact Grand Prize Winners, Whitney Eco-Club 🎉 🌎 💚 Long time participants of Grades of Green’s programs, the Whitney Eco-Club from Cerritos, California had an outstanding year promoting actions of sustainability. This student-led team set out to reduce textile waste by hosting a clothing swap and then creating homemade dog toys that were donated to a nonprofit at the Subaru Pacific Share the Love Event. The remaining clothing was donated to a local crisis shelter in order to ensure no item went to waste. Furthermore, the students completed the daunting application to become a California Green Ribbon School. In collaboration with school administration and district staff, the team was awarded the California Department of Education Green Ribbon Award. At the Golden Bottle Trust (GBT), the Hoare family uses a philanthropic profiling tool called Care4Most (www.care4most.org) to establish which causes mean the most to family members. Recently, the GBT’s focus on environmental projects intensified, with the funding target rising from 11% in 2018 to 20% in 2022. To maximise its impact, the GBT partnered with Impatience Earth to develop an 'ecosystem granting' strategy. This approach uses multiple smaller grants to address the interconnected nature of environmental issues, supporting solutions from the planting and preservation of seagrass to regenerative agriculture. Today, on World Environment Day, we join the global community in focusing on the need for land restoration, combating desertification, and enhancing drought resilience. This year's theme emphasizes restoring our planet’s ecosystems, a mission that Exela supports through our sustainable practices. Here are a few things we do to help: - Transition from paper to digital formats to conserve water and protect forests, essential for maintaining land health. - Use condensate water in our Exela facilities’ cooling systems to reduce reliance on municipal water supplies, supporting critical water conservation efforts. - Repurpose or recycle all outdated equipment and prioritize the use of recycled paper to minimize waste and enhance land restoration efforts. Let's reflect on how each action we take can restore and protect our planet. Join us in our ongoing efforts to create a more sustainable and resilient world. Embracing a Greener Future with Every Tree Planted 🌳 In the vast canvas of our planet, every tree paints a stroke of hope. Today, I want to spotlight an organization whose impact grows as deeply as the roots of the trees they plant – Trees for the Future (https://lnkd.in/g7f4G3ME). With the understanding that sustainability is not a solo journey, Trees for the Future unites a global community of supporters, dedicated to planting seeds that bear the fruit of a better tomorrow. Their transformative approach isn't just about planting trees; it’s about changing lives and restoring landscapes sustainably. The heart of their work beats through Forest Garden farmers, who are provided with training, seeds, tools, and resources. This equips communities in developing countries with the means to empower themselves and their environments. If you're moved by the possibility of making a lasting impact right now, explore how you can join this mission, because each contribution plants a seed that will flourish into a forest garden of opportunity. Progress thrives with collaboration. Let's root our actions in the preservation of our planet and support Trees for the Future! It’s more than an act of charity; it’s cultivating the foundation for a sustainable future. 🌱 #givingback #sustainability #environment #TreesForTheFuture

Earth Hour is happening tonight! The annual event encourages individuals, communities, and businesses to turn off non-essential electric lights, for one hour from 8:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. local time, usually on the last Saturday of March, as a symbol of commitment to the planet. This year, instead of merely turning off your nonessential lights for an hour, we’re challenging you to give an hour to Earth by doing something positive for the environment. Here are a few ways you can give an hour for Earth: - Take part in an outdoor excursion - Donate to protect nature - Explore your local outdoor space - Participate in a nature cleanup - Create arts and crafts from recycled or discarded plastic - Visit an exhibit or museum focused on the environment - Start a compost - Create a zero-waste meal - Meditate with nature - Grow a plant or create a garden Learn how you can give an hour for Earth and make a lasting impact at earthhour.org.

Have you seen Australian Environmental Grantmakers Network (AEGN)'s latest report? 🌱 Launched just this week by CEO Amanda Martin, the report shows that donations and bequests to charities have surged in recent years and giving to charities working on climate and environment grew 82 per cent over three years, from $148 million in 2018 to $270 million in 2021. Giving to climate and environment via structured philanthropy — represented by private ancillary funds (PAFs) and public ancillary funds (PuAFs) — has increased at ten times the rate of overall giving; PuAF giving has soared from $1.2 million in 2018 to $33 million in 2021. The report offers a comprehensive assessment of national and global philanthropic giving to climate and environment, summarising the megatrends influencing best practices in climate and environmental philanthropy. 🌍 Breaking news: we now have a Green Team! The team has been active for one quarter and has been working on the key areas of creating an environmental policy, improving the sustainability of our annual conference, and reducing our digital carbon footprint. 💡 Here are some of our main learnings so far: 1. Use available resources. We used sample environmental policies from other charities as a starting point and have been adapting these to fit with our own charities’ operations. This is better than starting from scratch and is a great way to understand what is possible across the board. 2. Focus on big impact areas. We came up with a lot of ideas in our first meeting, some more impactful than others. As we primarily work from home using digital tools, for example, we learned that going completely paperless in the office was less important than reducing our digital carbon footprint. When working with limited time and resources, it is key to identify which areas will likely have the biggest impact. 3. Ask around. If something has never been done before in your organisation, conceptualising how it might be done is likely to be a challenge. Don’t be afraid to reach out to people both internally and externally to help you move past obstacles with grace and ease. We look forward to sharing more of our insights as we move on through this journey, but in the meantime, how has your organisation improved its environmental impact? Share your learnings below! For more, you can also check out our 🌍 Climate Action Hub 🌍, where we explore all aspects of digital, tech, and the climate crisis.
