Some useful insights shared by Graeme Cooper...... With so much discussion and debate on the generation mix, sometimes the criticality of the transmission network can be lost. In the case of US aviation, the success of over 7% of the national GDP relies on it. This Jacobs research only reinforces that. We're seeing a greater need to focus significant grid upgrades to large-scale high-voltage interconnector projects in order to unlock the global energy transition - with direct relevance ranging from AI-driven data centers to EV giga factories.  

Grateful to the The Washington Post for interviewing me on exponentially rising electricity demand, which is impacting the ability of the #transportation sector to grow and #decarbonize. This affects #airports, #marine #ports #masstransit #freight #industry and the #builtenvironment. From my years at The Port Authority of New York & New Jersey and now from my role at AlphaStruxure, I’ve seen first-hand how fast load growth has come on and how so many airports are running out of power. There’s plenty of work to do in #aviation on the “hard to decarbonize” challenge. But the #HardToEnergize” challenge is hitting us in the here and now, across the economy. The good news: There are solutions! The New Terminal One at JFK is using a clean-energy microgrid to secure the power they need to grow and electrify. Other airports, ports, transportation companies, and transit agencies are following suit. By focusing on demand-side interventions like behind-the-meter #energy systems, we can accelerate the #energytransition and the benefits to the #environment, #greenjobs, #reindustrialization that come with it.   https://lnkd.in/e49SM5zA

It was great to see my article on the electrification of commercial fleets being published by Smart Energy International. With predictable routes and regular operations, most depot-based fleets are low-hanging fruits for electrification. However, the growth of localised electricity demand for fleets will pose specific challenges to our energy system. In this piece, I touch upon some of the main issues DSOs, energy suppliers and generators face as we electrify commercial road transport. Thank you Smart Energy International for the space!

Even more reason why the very first call a fleet considering electrification should make is to their electric utility. Also why micro grids and self generation will fill in the gaps where the utilities can’t or won’t. #StopBurningStuff

Electrification is more than an essential climate issue. Accelerating electricity demand is making this an economic development and productivity issue. The Washington Post article suggests that state and local governments will become more politically active in both requiring utility grid upgrades and facilitating private investment in electric generation and storage.
