Dickson Architects were appointed by a private client to design a new housing scheme for an infill site, currently occupied by single storey garages. The development follows the theme of a patio house, laid out along a new private cobbled street. Each property will benefit from private external amenity space on all floor levels, with shared common parts to encourage social interaction, to a level as desired, with neighbours. In response to site constraints, urban mass and to protect private amenity of existing and proposed houses alike, a single storey courtyard house completes the mews. The scheme will provide six high quality homes in the Borough of Waltham Forest. A quick rethink on a scheme we issued to a client back end of 2023. House originally designed as a 6 bed HMO with mix of ensuites and shared baths, suggested it would work a lot better as a 5 Bed all ensuite. The existing outhouse, we proposed as 2 x 1 bed apartments without dormer. House Swap I found the article ,''House Swap'' by Catherine Riviore to be very compelling as she talks about her personal experience  switching from owning a typical home on a huge property to living in a prefabricated granny flat in their garden, Coming from a West African country (Nigeria) to a developed country like Canada I too have noticed a lot of differences in the style of architecture. Back home we make use of different building materials for construction, different modes of assembly and so much more. Some of these differences may be as a result of the varying climatic conditions hence the use of different materials while some of the differences are still questionable. In my 4 years of living in Canada I have noticed that most of the houses make use of prefabricated construction, while this may seem as a cheaper and more efficient alternative it often leads to zero to little room for creativity as all the house have similar looks and structure and are often nicknamed  square wooden houses. In my opinion I feel prefabricated construction could be so much more than what it is right now and maybe in the nearest future the options available to home buyers would be more creative than it is now.  Permalink: https://lnkd.in/dyVsqC6i
