Must-read film industry memo alert! I'm so proud of supporting this work to elevate San Francisco Bay Area film. I commissioned two Bay Area film research projects, while at Kenneth Rainin Foundation, to deep our understanding of how the Arts Program could better support local filmmakers. I thought learning more about the local film industry would be essential to go beyond just making grants to actually help nurture the ecosystem. After the first project, researcher John Carnwath of WolfBrown recommended that we could greatly deepen our understanding with a follow-up project that could be led by Paula Smith Arrigoni, whom he interviewed as a Bay Area film leader adding perspective to his desk research. Paula, John and Bay Area Video Coalition's research and development manager, Kailen Sallander, did a remarkable job with the second project. There's tons to learn from BAVC's survey of the Bay Area’s makers and accompanying examination of what we can learn from other cities and regions successfully competing to attract film and media projects. Austin, Denver and New Orleans, to name a few, have major lessons for the Bay and I'm grateful for Paula's idea to subsequently publish the memo below. The work is already contributing to advances in the field. Namely bolstering the Oakland Film Commission's case supporting it's first film rebate incentive and a new production database. Despite huge budget challenges this year, the Oakland City Council approved it! The research's lesson are likely useful for many parts of the country, so if you work in or support film, get to reading. The memo takes the findings and makes them extremely actionable.
📊✨BAVC Media has published the Bay Area Film Production Memo, alongside a nationwide research study designed to learn more about strategies to boost film production in the Bay Area! The project was developed in collaboration with WolfBrown, with support from Film SF (the San Francisco Film Commission) and the Bay Area Media Maker Summit (BAMMS), East Bay Film Collective and essential funding from the Kenneth Rainin Foundation. 📰 Read the announcement exclusively on International Documentary Association (IDA)! The research involved consultation from an advisory committee representing the Roxie Theater, SFFILM, Ryzo Studio & Mindful Media, and the Kenneth Rainin Foundation

Founder @ HYPERREAL | WORK: Crafting brand stories. Positioning leaders to dominate their market | PLAY: Thought-provoking film, art, and literary work exhibited internationally
It doesn’t take £3m to make a first feature (as the heads at BBC Film and Film Four suggest) - and the idea it does makes it difficult for new voices to be heard. We spent (roughly) 1/30th of that budget to make Lapwing and had a UK cinema release and digital release across the US and Europe. If we had any more money it would have been spent on supporting our release which was the area most impacted by a lower budget. So yes, more money would have been great. But the idea it must cost millions to make a feature does not come from independent filmmakers - I can name multiple excellent films made for a fraction of that. So what are we optimising for? Better stories? More adventurous filmmakers? Developing talent? If we were doing that, we would make more, faster, and allow unique voices to develop in a space where risk and play is actually encouraged. I can tell you with certainty that Lapwing would never have happened if it needed £3m to get started and that would mean the talent involved would still be waiting for a chance to shoot something longer than a short. Show me someone with £3m to invest, and I’ll direct them to 10 exceptional projects that can be shot and still leave them with change. https://lnkd.in/edi-ybQD

Filmmaker | EMOTION IS DEAD | Aussie Indie Cinema Tour with Cast & Crew Q&A's. July-Sept '24 | EMOTIONISDEAD.COM.AU
EMOTION IS DEAD | INDIE FILM DISTRIBUTION 101 EPISODE 04. | REVENUE SPLIT We’ve finished our Adelaide metro run, screening seven times across three weekends, with total audience numbers at 1,168. That’s an average of 166 per screening. My biggest learning so far is the power of a cinemas existing audience. The more a cinema can get behind your film, the more they shout about it on their social media and emails, the better chance people will show up, because the cinemas established audience already has a relationship with the place, they probably live close to it and there’s a good chance they’re already film lovers. And a cinema will only be motivated to get behind your film if you’ve agreed a revenue split on ticket sales. That’s why I’m only screening EMOTION IS DEAD in cinemas that have offered a revenue share model, typically 50/50, and not screening at any cinemas that demanded an upfront hire fee-- Firstly because I can’t afford to pay an upfront fee, but there’s also a risk of actually losing money and paying the cinema to play my film, which is not the goal. So, if you wanna know if your local cinema respects independent filmmakers and supports Australian cinema culture simply ask if they offer filmmakers a revenue split-- If the answer’s no, then you have your answer. 🎬 Film Producer I Film Distribution and Marketing Consultant I AI Founder I Helping filmmakers package their films from beginning to end 🎥
Let’s talk about the person of the year according to Time Magazine. How Taylor Swift has challenged the film industry. Today, I will talk about Taylor Swift’s film distribution plan and how she challenged the film industry. Taylor Swift is at the top of her creative career; she is in the middle of her Eras Tour that ends in 2025 and decided to produce and release a film where she showed her concert. Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour was released on October 13th, and AMC theaters distributed it. Most film producers and filmmakers think there is only one way to release their films, and this is the traditional way of doing it; what we learn from Taylor’s movie release is that you can do whatever you want, but you need to stand by it. What did Taylor do differently from the rest of the film industry? She owns her own production company, Taylor Swift Productions Inc., which was in charge of filming her concert and putting everything together to release it in films. She bypassed all the intermediaries in the film chain and went directly to the exhibitors. The usual way is to produce, post-produce, send it to film festivals, find a film agent/film distributor, and reach exhibitors. If you don’t know what an exhibitor is, you need to watch my previous video, where I explain how film distribution works. But Taylor jumped the whole chain of people in the film industry and went directly to the chain cinema, and this gave her more money in return than working with a sales agent or a film distributor. The box office has, until now, been worth USD 234.4 million. If Taylor’s team negotiated a 50% ticket sale cut, roughly USD 117,2 million would be for her and her team. Do you want me to break down another film you like? Let me know in the comments. Remember, if you want to work with me. Lights, Camera, and Market is a service done for you where I take care of strategies, implementation, and execution while you create and do what you love; this way, your film will not only be produced but will be sold to the highest bidder. Let’s work together. Send me a DM or book a FREE Film Plan Call directly on my website.
