Happy Independence Day, #GreaterRichmond! On July 4, 1776, America adopted the Declaration of Independence to solidify the colonies' separation from Great Britain. Today, GRP joins in celebrating freedom and wishes the region a safe and relaxing holiday.

NEW: When Jamaican history professor Verene Shepherd began advocating in the early 2000s for colonial powers to compensate Caribbean nations for the horrors of slavery, the idea went largely unnoticed in Europe and the United States, write Zahra Burton and Brian Ellsworth. In Jamaica, some thought it would come across as “begging,” while others worried it would offend the British monarchy. Two decades later, the issue is routinely discussed by politicians throughout the Caribbean and is increasingly on the agenda of diplomatic summits. Countries across the region have created reparations commissions, the king of the Netherlands has formally apologized, as have a few prominent British families linked to the slave trade. But one question continues to dominate the debate: Will European countries really set aside taxpayer resources to meaningfully compensate the descendants of slaves in the Caribbean? #reparations #caribbean #colonialism #internationalrelations https://lnkd.in/e6rEH5sb

“…but it is a sad irony that those Australians most deeply impacted by cost-of-living pressures and those who stood to benefit most from a successful vote – Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples living in remote areas – were the strongest yes voters at the ballot box. This result, along with the massive yes volunteer movement and the significant uplift in awareness about the challenges facing Indigenous people, provide solid impetus for the ongoing movement for real justice for Indigenous people in our country. The defeat of the moderate voice proposal only increases the urgency for change and will galvanise advocates to keep the pressure on. Those who proclaim the referendum result signals the stopping or unwinding of Indigenous progress gravely underestimate the resilience of this movement.” — Dean Parkin , Campaign Director for the #Yes23 Campaign in 2023
Other than as a monument to resentful jingoistic stubbornness, 26 January makes no sense as a date to celebrate our past, present and future sense of nationhood. My opinion piece in the Guardian Australia.
The absurd 26 January debate overlooks that many on both sides want the same thing: a day of unity | Dean Parkin

NYAP recognizes and values the contributions of indigenous people in the United States. We are honored to have team members who are part of this rich heritage, and we thank you for bringing your perspectives to the work we do at NYAP. White House Proclamation: https://ow.ly/gxyG50Q6p79 "President Biden states in the 2022 White House Proclamation, "During National Native American Heritage Month, we celebrate Indigenous peoples past and present and rededicate ourselves to honoring Tribal sovereignty, promoting Tribal self-determination, and upholding the United States’ solemn trust and treaty responsibilities to Tribal Nations." America has not always delivered on its promise of equal dignity and respect for Native Americans. For centuries, broken treaties, dispossession of ancestral lands, and policies of assimilation and termination sought to decimate Native populations and their ways of life. But despite this painful history, Indigenous peoples, their governments, and their communities have persevered and flourished. As teachers and scholars, scientists and doctors, writers and artists, business leaders and elected officials, heroes in uniform, and so much more, they have made immeasurable contributions to our country’s progress." This week we mark another Independence Day where many will gather with friends and family to celebrate the holiday. What is the significance of this day? The Fourth of July is Independence Day for the United States. Before becoming a country, the U.S. was a group of colonies owned by Great Britain. On July 4th, 1776 the founding fathers approved the Declaration of Independence and announced their independence from Great Britain. Thus, beginning our country’s journey as an independent nation. During this busy time, please take a moment to reflect on all that we have as a country and the freedoms that we are afforded. Enjoy today’s Words of Wisdom (WOW) quote which speaks about our nation’s most significant symbol of freedom, our flag: “We take the stars from heaven, the red from our mother country, separating it by white stripes, thus showing that we have separated from her, and the white stripes shall go down to posterity, representing our liberty.” - George Washington Wishing you and your family a very safe and happy Independence Day! #customizedmanagementstrategies #IndependenceDay

"Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, as well as many non-Indigenous Australians, believe that 26 January cannot be a day of national celebration as it marks the date of invasion and the start of genocide and dispossession in Australia. The real story of these lands starts 60,000 years ago." Understand why many Australians say we should rethink January 26 as our national day of celebration, with this analysis from ANTaR (Australians for Native Title and Reconciliation). The article covers a range of viewpoints from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and non-Indigenous Australians on this important conversation. https://lnkd.in/gDQYCXD3

Why We Must Protect Our Freedoms on Independence Day. The 4th of July is a day to reflect, remember, celebrate and protect our freedoms. From a historical perspective, the Declaration of Independence set forth a unique ideal which has become the cornerstone value of America; enshrining our rights to Life Liberty and Pursuit of Happiness. We fought to achieve our Independence from forces without, and then from within to abolish slavery, women’s suffrage, and civil rights for all. But now we are challenged by politicians from within who seek to limit and stifle our rights to free speech by censorship and other acts. On this 248th birthday of our country, we must always reflect on the importance of our individual liberties, and fight to protect them for our future generations. #4thofjuly #independenceday #independenceday2024 #happy4thofjuly #happyfourthofjuly #freedom #freedomofspeech #freedomofpress #civilliberties #civilrights #freedomofreligion #freespeech #firstamendment #patriots #donaldtrump #maga #makeamericagreatagainagain #trumptrain #trumpsupporters #americanvalues #constitution #declarationofindependence #billofrights

Happy Independence Day America! Today, as we celebrate the founding of this great nation, let's reflect on the essence of our festivities. In its 248 years, the United States has achieved remarkable milestones that set it apart. From a functional democracy to the peaceful transfer of power, our commitment to freedom is unwavering. For many like me, who immigrated from dictatorships, America symbolizes hope and opportunity. The belief in unity amidst diversity is what makes this country exceptional. As we aid refugees and immigrants seeking safety and a fresh start, we uphold the values that define us. In a world where democracies are under unprecedented threat, safeguarding American freedom is paramount. Democracy is not just a system; it's the cornerstone of justice, freedom, and individual rights. Let's honor those who sacrificed for our liberty by defending the core principles of democracy today and always. Happy Independence Day! 🇺🇸 #IndependenceDay #AmericanFreedom #Democracy #Unity

WAS LIVE - #RoyalBulletin The Australian Republic Movement Reconciliation Australia Anthony Albanese The Hon. Peter Dutton MP https://lnkd.in/gxAVJdHT 6.00am - “A picture of the King and Queen Camilla, taken earlier this month in the gardens of Buckingham Palace, has also been released.” Me: are they serious? 6.09am - after a simple google review of several press articles and the standard of their liberties in this current epoch, I determined that Australian conservative press gangs are the monarchists. And even they, the Hibernian-Britannian stock who obsess over #monarchy the same way. But in a way of utter derision. Those who want to tear it up for reasons unresolved over there, we as First Nations say we must respect traditional authority in all nations, but where is the respect of 60,000 years for us? #WeThePeople can all endure and even hope for the demise of any world leader, but should we not begin to choose our leaders from the dew of the true grassroots under your feet in the deep nature of Australia in its tropical regions. 6.12am - no one is above the law, as we are learning from the demise of #Trump before the #SCOTUS 6.19am - Americans need to learn their origin in what even the UK 🇬🇧 has evolved from - #Monarchy is not #Immunetoscrutiny #Trump would play the role of a King and believed himself above scrutiny. But who the strongest man is now, is crystal clear: none of them. The women who this narrative should be about are almost silenced. I hope Joe Biden - who clearly respects the women in his life - respects the right for women to ascend to the highest office should the chance arise. No one is #immunetoscrutiny #WeThePeople - we as First Nations Australians stand with respect for women, children, Elders and victims of abuse. Ended. https://lnkd.in/gxAVJdHT
