The devastation from Helene is far worse than most realize. Whole cities and towns in the Southeast have been destroyed. No food, water or communication. If you are able, help in any way you can. If not monetarily, go through your closets and see if you have any clothing, bedding, baby items, toiletries, etc., that you can spare. Look for drop off locations in your area. And don't forget the animals. Pet food and supplies are desperately needed too. Many people will go without just to make sure their pets are fed and safely secured. FIELD UPDATE: Greater Good Charities is now en route to Spencer, Iowa, to respond to the catastrophic flash flooding that has resulted from days of unprecedented rainfall, pushing rivers to record levels across northwest Iowa. A broken levee has forced hundreds to evacuate from their homes, and now South Dakota and Minnesota residents face similar dire circumstances. Some towns inundated with flooding have turned off power, prompting water safety concerns, sewage issues and health concerns caused by the sweltering temperatures. Our team on the ground in Spencer will assess need and assist local partners with Good Packs containing hygiene supplies, comfort items and pet essentials for displaced families. We’re also mobilizing shipments of pet food and supplies to assist animal shelters caring for lost pets and shelter pets moved out of evacuation zones. There is nothing worse than seeing pets confused looking for their masters after a disaster and you know the pet’s family is worried about them as well.   Here are some ways to be prepared and protect you and your fur baby(s): -       Most importantly, have a plan of where your pet is going to go if something happens. As you may have heard on the news, the Texas Panhandle has been fighting devastating fires in many rural areas. The fires have been responsible for the death of more than 7,000 cattle with final numbers estimated to reach 10,000. It is reported that the fires have blazed across nearly 1.5 million acres of grasslands. Even if the cattle survive the initial fires, their struggle is not over. Injury, food scarcity, lack of fencing, and access to water still stand the foreground of recovery. The outcomes of the fires are truly devastating to the area. Superior Ag has committed to donating relief resources to the Texas Panhandle. To help with the relief efforts, Superior Ag will be sending a shipment of feed to Canadian, TX towards the end of this month. We are asking community members to donate bales of hay to accompany our feed donation. If you would like to donate hay, it can be dropped off at the Superior Ag Dale Feed Store, March 11-23, during normal business hours (Monday through Friday 7 a.m.-4 p.m. or Saturday 7-11 a.m. CST). Name, number and type of bales, and type of hay will be recorded at time of drop off. As April marks National Stress Awareness Month, we want to shed light on the immense challenges faced by front-line rescue workers. The theme for 2024 is #LittleByLittle, which highlights the transformative impact of consistent, small positive actions can have. Recently, we introduced you to Oriana Samuelsen, a firefighter whose journey took her from the highways of Washington State to the streets of Iraq, where she encountered the brave street dog, Big Girl, and her pack. Oriana's journey led her to WarPaws, where she continues to care for these vulnerable animals, despite the inevitable heartaches. Witnessing cruelty and neglect takes its toll, compounded by the constant financial struggles of running an animal rescue shelter. However, through awareness and support, we can make a difference. Ultimately, the work of small rescue groups and charities is about more than just saving individual dogs. It's about creating a world in which animals are valued and respected and in which their welfare is protected. Imagine having no fixed abode so no registered vet, and your animal is sick and needs care. Street paws works to help maintain the bond between humans and their pets by working to ensure being homeless does not mean leaving your pet behind in order to get ahead in life.
