I was recently asked for resources to help students find conservation jobs. (Skip to end of this post for the resources.) As I put together the list, I thought about all the ways people can get involved in conservation work. I've worked in government, nonprofits, and academia; I've been an entrepreneur, a lawyer, a program manager, a director. In each role, I was able to use my strengths to advance the goals of the organization. When someone asks what they should consider as a career, much advice has been written about (including by myself; you can read my blog post on books on sustainability careers here https://lnkd.in/gS9ECbjB). From personal experience, my advice is to really pay attention to what energizes you; to reflect on times you've excelled and what it was about those situations that brought out your best self. I'm a firm believer in strengths. I'm always in awe when I see someone's super power shining through. Full disclosure, I'm a certified Gallup CliftonStrengths coach. I got certified because I'm a believer that everyone has innate strengths that can be honed and developed. While you're searching for that ideal career, remember who you are and what you have to contribute that is unique to you. Below are the resources. I hope the current and future conservation professionals out there are able to use their super powers to advance their careers and conservation. Email lists. Here are a few that are curated for green jobs, environmental jobs, sustainability jobs, and clean energy jobs. Green Jobs Network https://lnkd.in/ggxK_888 Ed's Clean Energy & Sustainability Jobs List https://lnkd.in/g2KiEYHT Reconsidered Impact jobs list https://lnkd.in/g2ixW4rR Cohort alumni job boards. Many organizations have job boards for their alumni. Here are a couple of mine: Environmental Leadership Program https://lnkd.in/g4fJhivi EPA Alumni Association https://lnkd.in/gSNhA9yE Some member-based organizations post jobs from their members. Even if they don't, you can find an organization or association that does work you want to do and browse their membership to find companies you are interested in. For example, you can search for B Corporations on B Lab's website https://lnkd.in/gYwFDktt If you have a dream to work at a particular organization or company, look at their website to see if they post jobs. There are green recruiters to follow such as Ellen Weinreb and Trish Kenlon. J. Caleb Simon, M.Ed, NCC I hope this is helpful to our University of Lynchburg students!

https://lnkd.in/eKUNRrip Most of the relevant cities—47 of 50—mention green jobs in their CAPs, but they only tend to do so in passing. While some cities do not refer to green jobs at all in their plans, most cities only include a more general call for equity and greater net opportunities.

Community-Based Approaches in Park and Natural Resources Management** I recently had the opportunity to attend a course on community-based approaches in park and natural resources management. This experience has been incredibly enlightening, reinforcing the importance of involving local communities in the stewardship of our natural resources. The course covered various strategies to engage communities in conservation efforts, emphasizing the need for collaborative management practices. By integrating local knowledge and participation, we can create more effective and sustainable management plans for protected areas. One key takeaway is the significance of building strong partnerships with local communities. This not only fosters a sense of ownership and responsibility but also ensures that conservation efforts are culturally relevant and socially acceptable. Moreover, involving the community helps in identifying and addressing the socio-economic needs of the area, leading to a more holistic approach to conservation. Another highlight was learning about successful case studies where community involvement has led to remarkable conservation outcomes. These examples serve as inspiration and a blueprint for implementing similar strategies in our own projects. As I continue my work on the protected area management plan, I am excited to incorporate these community-based approaches. By doing so, I hope to foster a more inclusive and effective conservation strategy that benefits both the environment and the local communities. In conclusion, community-based approaches are essential for the sustainable management of parks and natural resources. By working together with local communities, we can achieve greater conservation success and ensure the long-term preservation of our natural heritage. #Conservation #CommunityEngagement #NaturalResourceManagement #Sustainability #ProtectedAreas #Collaboration #EnvironmentalStewardship

Most think that land use policies are boring. Maybe they are, but they are actually critically important for dealing with the global challenges we face. If you have 2 minutes, this blog gives you the essentials on land use that everybody should know.
💡 By 2050, it is expected that two-thirds of Europe’s regions will see a population decrease. Inefficient land use makes it more expensive for governments to maintain services and amenities in shrinking communities. Falling populations spread thin across large areas of land can result in rising per capita costs for infrastructure and services. In our NEW #COGITO blog Rudiger Ahrend, Andrés Fuentes Hutfilter, Jae Beum Cho and Matteo Schleicher delve into the vital role of land-use policies in tackling pressing issues such as #climatechange, biodiversity loss, and land degradation. These policies, often overlooked, play a significant role in shaping our environment and well-being. 🔎 Key highlights 🟢 The Finger Plan of Copenhagen, #Denmark, is an example of planning strategies that promote development near public transit corridors with minimum density thresholds. 🟢 A new metro line constructed in Manila, #Philippines, in 2000 increased the value of land within 1 km of the line’s stations by nearly USD 3.4 billion. 🟢 Cambridge, Massachusetts, has provided more than 1,000 units of affordable housing through the use of inclusionary zoning. 🌍 Happy #EarthDay to all of our fellow Earth-dwellers out there! Like these green cities, we hope that you're thinking about the environment not just today, but every day! Here are the five greenest cities in the United States according to WalletHub: 1. SanDiego, CA: https://lnkd.in/ex6Wqbv8 2. Honolulu, HI: https://lnkd.in/efPB9MAG 3. Portland, OR: https://lnkd.in/eqE762qP 4. Washington, DC: https://lnkd.in/gBamA4SQ 5. Seattle, WA: https://lnkd.in/eRCvJCrH What makes a city green according to WalletHub? Short answer: a bunch of things. Researchers compared 100 of the most populated cities in the U.S. across four dimensions: 1. Environment (Air Quality, Greenhouse Gas Emissions per Capita, Green Space, etc.) 2. Transportation (Share of Commuters, Avg. Commute Time, Walk Score, Bike Score) 3. Energy Sources (Share of Electricity from Renewable Sources, # of Smart Energy Policies) 4. Lifestyle & Policy (Farmer's Markets, Community Gardens, "Green" Jobs, etc.) Where does your current or future home stack up?
