More green energy from cow waste 🐮 💩? Yes please! ✅ Axpo has launched its first #biomethane project in Portugal that will use agricultural waste to produce more than 15 gigawatt hours of #renewableenergy a year. All you need to know at a glance: ➡ The initial investment amounts to around €8 million. ➡ The plant will contribute to Axpo’s 2030 objective of achieving a total annual biomethane production on the Iberian Peninsula of up to 1 terawatt hour. ➡ The facility is due to commence operations in late 2025. ➡ The biomethane will then be fed into Portugal’s national gas network. ➡ Since February 2022, our similar project in Spain (Torre Santamaría farm) 📸 👇🏼 has been injecting biomethane produced from the waste of 2,300 🐮 into the gas grid. 💬 "The development of this plant marks our entry into the biomethane market in Portugal, strengthening our leading position in the renewable sector with Axpo’s latest contribution to environmental sustainability" said Ignacio Soneira, Axpo Iberia CEO. Repsol, has announced a strategic investment into the biomethane sector by acquiring a 40% share in Genia Bioenergy, a Spanish firm specializing in the entire biogas and biomethane value chain. The agreement includes the development of 19 biomethane plants and 11 early-stage projects. These initiatives are set to play a pivotal role in boosting local economies through the creation of agro-industrial ecosystems that leverage waste valorization, particularly in rural areas.   Juan Abascal, Repsol’s Executive Managing Director of Industrial Transformation and Circular Economy, emphasized the strategic importance of this acquisition, stating that it enables the transformation of waste into sustainable fuels, thus integrating Repsol across the biomethane value chain. Bioethanol presents a significant opportunity for Brazil in its efforts toward decarbonization and the global transition to sustainable energy. With decades of experience, Brazil has become a leader in biofuel production, and bioethanol, in particular, offers a low-carbon solution for the transport sector, which is responsible for a substantial portion of global greenhouse gas emissions. Bioethanol can reduce emissions by up to 90% compared to gasoline and is compatible with existing infrastructure, allowing for rapid implementation. As over 70 countries blend ethanol with gasoline, Brazil's advancements in flex-fuel technology, where 85% of the fleet can run on pure ethanol or ethanol blends, position it as a model for sustainable energy use. Brazil's bioethanol experience also highlights the potential for international cooperation, fostering knowledge sharing, and driving global efforts toward reducing emissions. Biomethane, or Bio-LNG, was once the less talked about biofuel, however, it has since gained traction and poised to be the most dominant biofuel long term. It also has the ability to introduce the circular economy to the agricultural sector. This announcement by Green2x aims to do just that in the Nordics. "Green2x’ technology uses agricultural straw leftovers as biomass feedstock to produce biogas. The biogas is then upgraded to biomethane, which can be further upgraded to bio-methanol, Green2x explains. The straw for this project will be sourced from its plant in the Port of Vordingborg, Denmark. The project is expected to be completed by 2030." This kind of supply and procurement chain has the ability to put agricultural sectors in the Global South in pole position in terms of innovation and contributing to get to net zero. It also contributes to energy security. Using agricultural waste like stubble for biomethane also gives farmers a steady, year-round source of income, and disincentivezes them from burning the waste, reducing chronic air pollution. GREEN GENIUS is taking a significant step by transforming our biogas plants into biomethane, marking the largest project of its kind in the Baltics.     Our Lithuanian biogas portfolio includes 11 plants, with seven set to be upgraded for biomethane production. Additionally, a new plant will be built, and two biomethane injection points will be installed. 🌟 The total investment for this modernization is €35 million, partly funded by Swedbank Lietuvoje and an additional €8.5 million from Aplinkos projektų valdymo agentūra (the Lithuanian Ministry of Environment’s Environmental Project Management Agency). This #Partnership not only boosts our country's energy sector but also aligns to invest in sustainable innovations.     Ruslanas Sklepowicz, CEO of GREEN GENIUS, highlights the project’s significance: 'This transformation is a giant leap towards Lithuania's commitment to sustainable and renewable energy sources.
