🌟 Reflecting on #CERAWeek, arguably the world’s most influential #energy conference, where industry, government, financial institutions, academia and NGOs engaged here in Houston in dynamic and sometimes heated debates.
The 2024 edition centered on the successes and challenges of the energy transition, starting from how it means different things to different people, particularly in the context of the global north-global south divide.
This year, the conference’s focus shifted from energy supply to energy demand, with significant attention to #power and #AI.
Here are my three key takeaways from the discussions:
1️⃣ Emphasis on AND-equations: The energy transition must address simultaneous demands for more energy AND lower emissions. The pathway forward will involve both low- AND zero-carbon energy: LNG, #CCUS, blue and green H2/NH3, renewables, and #nuclear.
2️⃣ Refocus on the low-hanging fruit: A strong call to action on accelerating methane emissions reduction, in the wake of COP28.
3️⃣ While technical #innovation and #climate solutions seem to be available, aligning #global politics/policies and securing financing in time to achieve the Paris Agreement goals prove to be the most complicated hurdles.
A highlight of the week was the Women in Energy dinner hosted by ExxonMobil, which featured a line-up of extraordinary impressive speakers (Kathleen Ash, Leanne Todd, Amani Abou-Zeid أماني أبوزيد, Evelyn Wang and Martina Cheung), and massive attendance of female and male leaders in energy. Powerful.
🌍 CERAWeek underscored once again the importance of collaborative and coordinated efforts on a global scale toward a sustainable energy future, and of attracting and retaining talents to the industry.
