Meet Johann Bauer, the visionary behind Bauers Beeradies® in Wollsdorf, Eastern Styria, home to one of Austria's largest strawberry greenhouses. 🍓 Johann's journey began with a dream to extend the enjoyment of Austrian strawberries beyond their traditional season. Johann and his family ensure that each fruit is nurtured to perfection, providing consumers with the finest quality strawberries. The Bauer family has worked with Greenyard for many years. "Their handshake quality and professional partnership has been invaluable to us. Our aim is to produce strawberries out of season so that Austrian customers can enjoy them almost all year round," says Johann. Their cultivation process is meticulous: - Planting: Starts in early August, with flowering at the end of August. - Harvesting: Begins in mid-September and lasts until the end of December. - Resting period: Plants rest for about four weeks in January. - Spring season: Plants wake up in late February, flower in early May and harvest continues until early June. Together with Greenyard, Johann aims to create a healthier future through pure-plant innovation and sustainability. #Greenyard #ForAHealthierFuture

German vineyards, prominently situated on steep slopes, are highly susceptible to soil erosion. This vulnerability is exacerbated by traditional, non-conservative cultivation practices, which increase the risks of runoff and consequential soil loss. These challenges pose serious threats to the sustainability and productivity of wine-growing operations. One innovative and effective solution to mitigate soil erosion in these vineyards is the use of hemp straw. Hemp straw, derived from the stalks of the hemp plant after fiber extraction, offers several benefits when used as ground cover in vineyards: Erosion Control: Hemp straw can significantly reduce soil erosion by protecting the topsoil from rain impact and water runoff. Its fibrous, durable nature allows it to stay in place on steep slopes, providing a barrier that helps to keep the soil intact. Moisture Retention: By covering the soil, hemp straw helps to retain moisture in the ground. This is particularly valuable during dry periods, reducing the need for frequent watering and thereby conserving water resources. Soil Health: As hemp straw decomposes, it enriches the soil with organic matter, improving soil structure and fertility. This enhancement supports the growth of healthier vines, which can better resist pests and diseases and potentially improve grape quality. Sustainability: Utilizing hemp straw aligns with sustainable agricultural practices by recycling a natural by-product. This approach not only contributes to the health of the vineyard but also reduces agricultural waste. Low Impact Implementation: Spreading hemp straw is a relatively low-impact practice that does not require heavy machinery, thus avoiding further soil compaction, which is another factor contributing to erosion. Integrating hemp straw into vineyard management could thus be a part of a broader strategy aimed at enhancing the environmental sustainability of wine production in Germany. This approach not only addresses immediate issues such as soil erosion but also contributes to the long-term health of the vineyard ecosystem, securing the future of wine production in regions with challenging landscapes. #wineindustry #hemp #sustainability Artemis Growth Partners Aurora Cannabis Inc. Have you ever wondered about the story behind our onions? At Wildeklawer, we're passionate about bringing you the finest quality produce, which all starts with the careful selection of seed cultivars. Onions have a two-year life cycle. In the first year, it grows from seedlings into bulbs, developing their natural packaging - those protective layers of outer skin that keep them fresh from the ground to your table. In the second year, provided they are left in the ground, they bloom and set seeds ready to start the cycle anew. At Wildeklawer we work on a one-year-cycle. Sourcing the best seed cultivars is key. Louis and Cora de Kock, owners of Wildeklawer Farm, travel the globe seeking out top-quality varieties. From the United States to the Netherlands, Japan to Australia, Wildeklawer leaves no stone unturned in our quest for excellence. We're committed to ongoing research and development right here at home, ensuring that our onions thrive in Wildeklawer's unique growing conditions. So next time you slice into a Wildeklawer onion, know that it's more than just a vegetable - it's the culmination of a worldwide journey, carefully cultivated for your enjoyment. #WildeklawerOnions #QualityProduce #FromSeedToTable

Think of an orchard. What comes to mind might be tall trees laden with fruit, perhaps with sheep grazing in the shade below. That doesn't reflect the modern commercial production of apples and pears. Instead, today's orchards feature long rows of short trees trellised like grape vines for efficient pruning and harvesting. While these high-density systems produce more fruit on less land, those gains come at a cost to biodiversity and landscape. Recognizing what's lost as traditional orchards disappear, supermarket chain Kaufland Deutschland just introduced K-Bio Bioland apple juice, made with 30% apples from 'Streuobstwiesen,' or meadow orchards. Not just a distinctive feature of regional landscapes, these traditional orchards are among Central Europe's most ecologically rich habitats, harboring thousands of species of plants, insects, birds and other animals. To produce its new apple juice and help preserve meadow orchards, Kaufland is working with organic food association Bioland e.V. and conservation non-profit Schlaraffenburger. Project MykoDeck finds promising results for peat-reduced and even peat-free covering soil for mushrooms In three out of five mushroom farms, higher yields were achieved with 50% peat-reduced or peat-free covering soil than with the controls with peat. The comments were: "Good number of pieces and spreading," "Good quality of the mushrooms," or "The mushrooms are a little heavier and more aromatic." However, the peat-reduced covering soil seemed to dry out a little faster in the experiments than the peat-containing control and had to be watered a little more often. The first 100% peat-free trials with white mushrooms are currently taking place. According to the scientists, the results of the current laboratory trials by Institut für Holztechnologie Dresden gemeinnützige GmbH (IHD) with mushrooms (brown and white) without peat are very promising. Transfer partners from the industry are Pilzhof Pilzsubstrat Wallhausen GmbH (substrate manufacturer) and ReiPiKo Reitzenhainer Pilzkorb GmbH (mushroom grower). The project is funded by the Fachagentur Nachwachsende Rohstoffe e.V. (FNR). The world's first peat-free covering soils for the production of mushrooms and other compost mushrooms, such as almond and crested ink caps, are to be produced in the future - probably in 3 years - by the industrial partner LAV Erdenwerk according to mushroom-specific IHD recipes. A French built Vitibot robot helps ensure healthy organic vines by cultivating the soil beneath the plants, Silverhand Vineyard's CEO, Gary Smith explained during his interview for the next Fourth Portal newspaper on innovation. The determination to develop a £15 price point for an organic ‘Sparkling Wine of England’ was clear, as is the commitment to do so in the most sustainable way possible. The seriousness with which Silverhand pursues this became apparent when meeting the 'Farm and Conservation Team', a dedicated department of 5, out of the 110 employees based on the Gravesham estate, which include a shepherdess and a herdsman. Sheep grazing between the vine is only one of the methods the estate strives to use in its conservation strategy to enhance biodiversity. The team believe that ‘if we have diverse meadows and pastures we will have stronger and more robust vines’. There will be more on this in Fourth Portal newspaper Issue 2 on innovation, available in autumn 2024. https://lnkd.in/eR2GPaii #innovation #robots #newtechnology #farming #vineyards #neweconomy
