We're proud to announce that Geneviève Pons-Deladrière, Director-General and Vice-President of Europe Jacques Delors, will be contributing to two crucial discussions on the future of our ocean and the Mediterranean region, during the Forum Mondial de la Mer - Bizerte on 13 September.
During the opening session, Geneviève Pons will present our Manifesto for a European Ocean Pact, published in collaboration with the Oceano Azul Foundation, looking at its origins, its first successes, its relevance to the Mediterranean Sea, one of the most polluted seas in the world, and the objectives for the 3rd UN Ocean Conference, which will take place in Nice, France, in June 2025.
She will then join a panel discussion, “Quelle science pour l’Océan !?” exploring the latest scientific advancements, such as the Digital Twin of the Ocean, and strategies included in our Manifesto to build knowledge for ocean sustainability.

🎙 New interview! Loreley Picourt, Executive Director of the Ocean & Climate Platform, talks to the Secrétariat d’État chargé de la Mer et de la Biodiversité during the Monaco Ocean Week about expectations for #UNOC3, and explains the crucial role of civil society to accelerate #ocean protection.
‘The United Nations Ocean Conference in Nice is absolutely essential to accelerate ocean governance, whether we're talking about the high seas, the seabed or the ocean-climate-biodiversity nexus. We therefore need Member States to commit to more ambitious ocean governance goals.’

Last month, I had the chance to go to the #MonacoOceanWeek 🇲🇨 with local & international experts and civil society organizations, including professionals from the Ocean & Climate Platform, to attend their two side-events related to public policies implemented by the French Secretariat of State for the Sea and Biodiversity (Secrétariat d’État chargé de la Mer et de la Biodiversité) and also to interview professionals in the field:
1️⃣ Adapting coastal cities and communities to tackle sea level rise 🌊
Global sea level rise is caused by the increased melting of land-based ice, such as glaciers and ice sheets. With ocean warming and high levels of greenhouse gas emissions, sea level will continue to rise at higher rates, according to experts. This phenomenon results in extreme weather events and major repercussions for coastal cities: land loss, flooding, coastal erosion, ecosystem degradation, and so on. In its Global Risks Report 2024 (https://lnkd.in/epZpQCgf), World Economic Forum showed us that extreme weather events were seen as “the second-most severe risk over the two-year time frame", and also, nearly all environmental risks featured among the 10 global risks over the longer term (ten-years time frame): extreme weather events, critical change to Earth systems, and biodiversity loss.
Sea level rise and coastal adaptation still remain under-addressed but they recently have been defined as a clear political priority. They will be addressed and discussed at the next United Nations Ocean Conference #UNOC3 🇺🇳in Nice in June 2025, during an inaugural international event.

2️⃣ “Let's Be Nice to the Ocean”: an initiative to prepare for the UNOC 3
In June 2025, the Governments of France and Costa Rica 🇫🇷🇨🇷 will co-organize the third UN Ocean Conference in Nice. They have mandated Remi Parmentier (The Varda Group) and Loreley Picourt (Ocean & Climate Platform) to co-facilitate the participation of civil society in Nice. Civil society organizations play a crucial role in ocean governance, their voices need to be heard and their ideas need to be taken into account.
💬They were invited to share their innovative, actionable and relevant ideas to https://lnkd.in/e7M_igSS in order to protect the ocean.

Achieving #30x30 | With 2030 just around the corner, the challenge of meeting 30x30 is becoming increasingly dire. At a Plenary Session covering Effective Management of Marine Protected Areas at the Our Ocean Conference in Athens, Enric Sala (National Geographic Explorer-in-Residence) shared that in order to achieve 30% of protected areas in the next 6 years, we need 200 more giant MPAs (100,000km2 or more) and over 100,000 coastal MPAs (10km2 or less) — in the next 6 years. Based on calculations, this means 40 new MPAs have to be created EVERYDAY. How many new MPAs were created yesterday and how many will be created tomorrow?
Moreover, the majority of MPAs today still allow extractive activities, which is why Greece’s recent announcement to ban bottom trawling in marine parks is so significant. (https://lnkd.in/gm-BYShc)
