The UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development will deliver the science we need for the ocean we want.

À propos

The United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021-2030) (Ocean Decade) will stimulate ocean science and knowledge generation to reverse the decline of the state of the ocean system and catalyse new opportunities for sustainable development. The vision of the Ocean Decade is ‘the science we need for the ocean we want’. The Ocean Decade provides a convening framework for scientists and stakeholders from diverse sectors to develop the scientific knowledge and the partnerships needed to accelerate and harness advances in ocean science to achieve a better understanding of the ocean system, and deliver science-based solutions to achieve the 2030 Agenda. The UN General Assembly mandated UNESCO's Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) to coordinate the preparations and implementation of the Decade.

It's International #LiteracyDay! What is #OceanLiteracy, and why is it important? To protect the ocean, it is critical to understand and respect it. This is what ocean literacy is all about: it means understanding of the ocean’s influence on us, and of our influence on the ocean. Creating an ocean-literate society is a priority of the #OceanDecade, and is the focus of Decade Challenge 10. From DGPM - Directorate General for Maritime Policy providing guidance on ocean literacy in schools in Portugal to Universidade Federal do ABC setting up a virtual museum on Antarctica and SOA TANZANIA raising awareness about the value of seagrass meadows and mangroves, see how we support efforts to improve ocean literacy for all around the world: https://lnkd.in/dR84rkSe

#LiteracyDay | Launched in June, the #VeniceDeclaration for Ocean Literacy in Action outlines how to engage society to regenerate the most valuable ecosystem on our planet. Ocean literacy is more than understanding ocean science; it means recognizing the far-reaching consequences of our actions. By cultivating a global culture of ocean stewardship, we can facilitate a future where we thrive in harmony with the ocean. It is our collective will and responsibility to foster a more just and sustainable relationship with our vital global commons: all life on Earth depends on it. We need an ocean-literate society that advocates for policies that respect the ocean’s inherent right to exist, flourish and regenerate. The ocean literacy movement has undergone a remarkable evolution. From its beginnings as a school-based initiative to teach ocean science, it has blossomed into a vibrant, global community that recognizes the ocean's vital importance to our future. This diverse network, spanning cultures, generations and geographies, shares a passion for the ocean and a commitment to respect it. In a promising shift, the movement is increasingly embracing the wisdom of Indigenous and local communities, and acknowledging the critical role of an ocean-literate society. Through common purpose and close collaboration, this community is working tirelessly to restore humanity's relationship with the ocean. The #VeniceDeclaration was launched during the Ocean Literacy World Conference, held within the framework of the #SeaBeyond project - a collaboration between Prada Group and UNESCO Ocean - as well as the #OceanDecade Coordination Office for Connecting People and Ocean. With International #LiteracyDay just around the corner, it’s the perfect moment to think about how we can grow an ocean-literate society. #OceanDecade Challenge 10 is a key part of this effort, aiming to highlight the many ways the ocean benefits our well-being, culture, and sustainable development. Here is a glimpse into what has been achieved so far: 🔵 Defining ocean literacy: Progress has been made in defining what ocean literacy means and how to measure it. 🔵 Community involvement: Initiatives are actively involving communities in ocean conservation efforts. 🔵 Foundational strategies: Initiatives like the Venice Declaration for Ocean Literacy in Action help to mobilize the global ocean literacy community as it seeks to contribute to the global policy agenda. 🔵 Large-scale initiatives: Programmes such as Ocean Literacy With All, a flagship #OceanDecade Programme led by UNESCO Ocean, are promoting ocean literacy across geographies and sectors. International #LiteracyDay | How can we build an ocean-literate society? The Ocean Decade Vision 2030 White Paper on Challenge 10 explores different paths forward to restore society's relationship with the ocean, ensuring that the ocean is understood respected, and cared for. #OceanLiteracy is one of the key tools to achieve this goal. Existing relationships with the ocean are varied, shaped by our unique experiences that are rooted in history, culture, place, and livelihoods. Many people around the world feel a strong bond with the ocean and the broader natural world; they are part of it, and it is part of them. The ocean must become inextricably linked with our sense of self, our sense of place, and our collective well-being. Restoring society's relationship with the ocean is a critical part of the Ocean Decade's mission, and is the focus of Decade Challenge 10. This complex endeavor raises many questions: in what ways can we be in a relationship with a non-human entity? How are relationships with the ocean cultivated and transformed? Whose relationships with the ocean should change? In what ways does the Ocean Decade community and science need to change? In this White Paper, 30 experts provide insights and guidance on how the Ocean Decade can support the global ocean community to transform humanity's relationship with the ocean. 👉 Download the full report here: https://ow.ly/zFbP50SC2Y0 👉 This White Paper is one of a series of ten White Papers, all of which focus on a specific Decade Challenge and are authored by an expert Working Group, that together outline the future path of the Ocean Decade.
