Achieving #30x30 | With 2030 just around the corner, the challenge of meeting 30x30 is becoming increasingly dire. At a Plenary Session covering Effective Management of Marine Protected Areas at the Our Ocean Conference in Athens, Enric Sala (National Geographic Explorer-in-Residence) shared that in order to achieve 30% of protected areas in the next 6 years, we need 200 more giant MPAs (100,000km2 or more) and over 100,000 coastal MPAs (10km2 or less) — in the next 6 years. Based on calculations, this means 40 new MPAs have to be created EVERYDAY. How many new MPAs were created yesterday and how many will be created tomorrow? Moreover, the majority of MPAs today still allow extractive activities, which is why Greece’s recent announcement to ban bottom trawling in marine parks is so significant.
