iMONITRAF! has published its 2023 annual report on #transalpine road traffic. Last year, traffic volumes on the major Alpine corridors have exceeded the pre-pandemic level of 2019 and are projected to keep on rising. The iMONITRAF! network concludes that #Alpineregions are challenged to better manage both #road and #rail infrastructures in a joint approach. The report contains data and figures on road transport flows, emissions measured along the main transalpine roads or on the deployment of alternative fuels. Special focus on #decarbonisation of vehicle fleets. Interested in Arctic tourism safety? The challenges facing cruise tourism in the Arctic are numerous and require specialised equipment and training. In late 2022, some of these hazards were realised. On 28 November 2022, on the ship Viking Polaris, there was an incident involving one of the ship’s Zodiacs (tender boats). One passenger was injured, and another ended up in the water, causing the ship to interrupt the cruise to perform a medical evacuation. On 29 November 2022, the ship was crossing the Drake Passage from Antarctica to Ushuaia when she was hit by a breaking wave just southeast of Cape Horn. The accident caused seven stateroom windows to break and caused major damage inside the staterooms. One passenger died, and eight were injured. 🚀 Francisco Rodero Blanquez of CIMNE Innovation Unit CENIT is in Brussels this week preparing for the Midterm Review of the OCEAN Navigation Awareness Project 🌊🐋 Below you can see one of the technological developments from Work Package 4 - a buoy equipped with hydrophones designed to detect cetaceans. 🎤🌊 The data collected from this buoy will be sent to CIMNE's to analyse in an effort to reduce maritime accidents 📊🔄 The OCEAN Navigation Awareness Project aims to reduce accidents at sea by providing support to navigators to help them avoid hitting marine mammals and floating containers. France is present in the tropical band of the three oceans: Pacific, Indian and Atlantic, and the sun never sets on our country, which has the second largest maritime area in the world (EEZ), not far behind the United States and well ahead of the Australians. Above all, France has the largest submarine area in the world, including 58,000 km² of coral reefs. In other words, an undervalued and priceless heritage. Particularly, an unexploited heritage! Australia's Great Barrier Reef is one of the most breathtaking natural wonders in our backyard, a testament to nature's beauty and resilience. However, recent drone imagery from Lizard Island reveals a heartbreaking reality: 97% of the coral there is now dead due to mass bleaching. As the stewards of this magnificent ecosystem, our actions today determine its future. We can either rise to the challenge and fight to protect and restore our reefs, or we can be remembered as the generation that gave up. The choice is ours. What legacy do we want to leave? Today, we #ZoomOn the Nautilos H2020 Project! Safeguarding our underwater cultural heritage is often seen as an expensive endeavour, as access to these sites is often difficult and costly. 💰🪼 🌊 To ensure more accessible access to the depths and data of our oceans, Nautilos is developing a new generation of low-cost sensors and samplers and integrating them into its many observation sites. 🤝Bringing together 21 entities from 11 European countries, the overall aim of the project is to improve European observation tools by providing higher resolution data and democratising ocean monitoring for all users. This goal is also shared by the THETIDA partners, in particular Edgelab srl and CIMA Ualg, who are partners in both initiatives. 🐳 Project partners are developing a variety of sensors, such as animal-borne instruments, aquaculture observation systems, acoustic marine mammal monitoring systems and many others, which are being demonstrated in European seas.
