Some takeaways from Stephen Overty and I following the Global Offshore Wind event in Manchester last week • UK : very active market, advancing floating OSW projects in particular • Ireland : progressing 5GW by 2030, 20GW/2035 and 37GW/2050, 4 projects successful in 2023 auction • Europe : very active markets with new countries accelerating plans, established supply chains and project partnerships • Asia : attractive markets in Taiwan, Vietnam and Japan in particular • Australia and NZ : much more enthusiasm for exploring opportunities in OSW post announcements of FLs with many companies looking to estaslish local operations (from developers, owners, consultancies) • Floating vs Fixed bottom : Advances in Floating foundations & O&M practices giving confidence in the technology • Challenges : Start/stop nature of projects, financial constraints from some developers, mobilising supply chain, talent and in particular the talent shortages projected in 3-5 years • Opportunities/Solutions : Apprenticeship & Trainee programs, international mobility, cross skilling from other sectors (eg offshore Oil & Gas). I am incredibly concerned that not a single critical comment has been posted here yet. Equinor plans to expand its business, creating new oil fields and emitting more carbon dioxide for years to come (2). Only 0,23% of Equinor’s energy mix is renewable and the company has been called out for greenwashing its activities. Instead of joining the transition towards ecologically and socially responsible activities and technologies, Equinor turns to third countries, lobbying, and greenwashing. Not only is Equinor actively misleading people about its activities, but it is also heavily destroying the foundations of life on earth, our oceans and forests, and increases Norway’s dependence on fossil fuel jobs and industry. Equinor could decide not to pursue further oil and gas projects, and instead drive change by going environmentally friendly, social, and anti-colonial. Equinor decides actively not to do so. My internship trip at GC Solar Industries is a moment that rendered me an impressive understanding and application of the renewable energy sector. I was on the internship as a finance intern, and on that position many responsibilities were assigned to me by increasing my skills on the budgeting, forecasting, financial reporting and compliance. The internship offered practical experience beyond creating theories and offered practical experience in the practical financial working of an organization that is a solar water heater manufacturer. Another important and relevant aspect of my internship was the opportunity to receive the detailed information about the specifics of the solar energy business. GC Solar Industries being goal-oriented in utilizing renewable energy contributed towards creating a learning organization that I could actively participate in the company’s objective of encouraging utilization of solar energy. Moreover, in my position, there were opportunities to perform data analysis and performance monitoring of the solar energy systems which is vital for optimization. Working at GC Solar Industries also helped her to understand the meaning of sustainable development together with innovations in a company. I noticed the company’s commitment to being in compliance with national and international standards and this also explained how sensitive the company is in achieving high standards when it comes to its products and services. It is culturally sensitive in addressing the global call to implement sustainable practices as well as supports the fight against climatic change through promising development of renewable energy. In the course of the internship, it was my honor to work with a team of professional who gave me directions and assistance. This kind of structure was beneficial to my professional learning, as I was able to gain useful theoretical skills like teamwork, problem solving and interperson skills. It is, therefore, quite beneficial to interact with other industry players and colleagues as well as the use of online resources, as these sources of information were helpful. excellent networking opportunities that, I strongly think might help me in the future as I seek a job in the renewable energy industry. To sum up, internship at GC Solar Industries was productive and informative, which helped me to understand the sphere of solar energy and financial factors influencing the industry. The knowledge and skills gained in this field together with the practical application of the course material, involve and networking experience gained during this period equip me to take up a fruitful career in the renewable energy sector where I envision creating positive impacts utilizing creative solutions that support sustainable energy solutions
