“Wind and solar generation fluctuate with the seasons and the weather, but with hydro — where you have water storage — you have a choice about when you generate that electricity, and you can match it to when a consumer needs it.” Our Acting CEO, Erin van Maanen, recently caught up with Lucy Feagins from the The Design Files, to discuss the renewable energy transition happening across Australia ⚡ Households have a huge influence on how our energy market operates, with solar and home battery installation continuing to positively impact a cleaner grid. And down here in Tassie, we have a flexible power source (generated using abundant rain) to ensure energy supply when the wind isn’t blowing, and the sun isn’t shining.  “Our total renewable energy storage capacity here in Tasmania is more than the rest of the country combined!” Read more at 👉 https://lnkd.in/gUPM_whc   Photos by Eve Wilson and Julian Tay. Last financial year threw a raft of challenges and opportunities at us! With the lowest inflows in 90 years, our teams carefully managed the system to maintain reliable generation and healthy dam levels, delivering good returns for every drop of water.   Check out just some of the highlights from financial year 2023-24 👇 🌧 Thanks to careful management of the system and prudent trading in the National Electricity Market, we delivered a pre-tax profit of $193.7 million. This means we’ll return a dividend of $122 million to the State Government to be spent on vital infrastructure and services for Tasmanians. ⚡ Our crews undertook major upgrades at Mackintosh, Lemonthyme, Rowallan, Gordon AND Poatina Power Stations, plus Murchison and Meadowbank Dams! “Our hydro network can’t stand still in time. We’re transforming it to ensure it delivers for Tasmanians today, tomorrow and for generations to come,” said Acting CEO, Erin van Maanen. ❤️ We provided $223,000 to Tasmanian non-profits and organisations through partnerships and community grants. 🦺 Our total recordable injury frequency rate of 2.51 indicated that we maintained very low levels of workforce injuries throughout the year. 💡 4,500 primary and secondary students across Tasmania participated in Generation Hydro programs and events, getting involved with hands-on STEM activities.   What a year! We were so excited when our friends at Hamlet cafe recently invited us in for a tour of their facilities. As one of Hobart’s fantastic social enterprise initiatives Hamlet offers people with disabilities agency, opportunity and tailored support to participate with confidence in Tasmanian workplaces and communities. We were also lucky enough to explore their new brand catering kitchen which has been fully electrified and able to churn out over 370 catering orders in the last year to support events all over Southern Tasmania! Executive General Manager Commercial at Hydro Tasmania

We keep a very close eye on the weather here at Hydro Tasmania.   As Australia’s largest generator of renewable energy, rain = energy = profit. And because we return 90 per cent of our profits to the State Government, it also means better healthcare, housing, and education for Tasmanians.   So, it’s incumbent upon us to make the most of whatever the weather throws at us.   This year alone, it’s thrown us drought, fire, floods and even lightning strikes. Coordinating generation across our network of 30 power stations and 54 major dams has been an intricate dance. Fortunately, we have some of the world’s best people working on the system.   Continue to read more at 👉 https://lnkd.in/gWzPuexy
