As Black History Month transitions into International Women's Day, this video from Don Peebles as he receives the Business Icon Award at The Grio Award, highlights the shared challenge both groups face in access to capital. "The fuel to run the motors of business is capital. Now, let me give you an illuminating fact. Today, there is over 82 Trillion dollars invested in venture capital and private equity. Of that 82 trillion dollars less than 1.3% of it is invested in firms run or owned by women or people of color. Combined. What that means is 98.7% of venture capital money, 81 trillion dollars out of 82 trillion dollars is provided to white men. Yet, white men represent only 31% of America's population. Women represent 51% of Americans, we Black Americans are 13% of Americans. Thus, you have 64% of the population receiving less than 1.3% of the investment capital." ~ Don Peebles Link to video in the comments. These numbers are not unique to the US. Less than 2% of VC funding globally is invested in female founded businesses. Less than 2%! In 2024, Growing the 2% Club is committed to amplify and advocating for female founders seeking the investment and liquidity to grow their businesses. If you are a fund manager in the position to invest in a fabulous female founded business, 🎯 Write the check. If you are a family office looking to make a true impact, 🎯 Seek out female founded businesses that are ready to scale. If you feel your business is already making an effort in this space, 🎯 Do more. If you are a purchasing department, of large corporations purchasing from female founded businesses, 🎯 understand the reality of the 2% Club and find ways to accelerate or adapt the payment terms with your purchase. Please feel free to highlight people doing hero's work in this space. #blackhistorymonth #internationalwomensday #Grow2PercentClub

And The Award Goes To 🏆 A great way to be noticed is by getting an award 🏆 or industry recognition. Not only do you get noticed, it helps establish you as an expert or leader in your field. No matter your business size 🏆 will boost your visibility. 🎗 Some awards you can nominate yourself for, and others need 3rd party to nominate you. 🎗 Carefully research which awards are relevant, both large (national) and small (local). 🎗 Give full attention to the requirements and deadlines. 🎗 Highlight your achievements, results, innovations, or impact you or your company have made. 🎗 When possible quantify your impact. Numbers add weight to your submission. 🎗 Get a testimonial from a client or respected member of the community. ▶ When you get that award promote the win across your social media and marketing channels. ▶ Consider a press release of your award to get further recognition. ▶ Add the organization logos to your website, email, packaging, storefront, etc. Transparency note: I have no affiliation with Carrie Charles, however, I wanted to highlight a recent award winner, give her the shout-out she deserves, and highlight the value of industry recognition. https://lnkd.in/eHBeRyGS

I am hoping many of you are as excited as we are about the Arca awards. Hopefully, you have already nominated, but you can always nominate more! If you have not nominated someone yet - do it now. It is not fancy or hard. You need to know her name, company and write a small paragraph on why she rocks. No excuses. Heck, nominate yourself. No one can even see who nominated, so go all out and brag yourself up. All joking aside, I am tired of hearing how there are not enough strong women out there. It is the excuse I get when I ask why the team is still all men - no women applied. Or the panel of speakers at the conference is all male - they don't want to put themselves out there. Don't get me wrong - I love my guys, but there are some wicked chicks out there quietly just getting it done. Guys, you know them. If you want to be a true ally, then call them out. I refuse to believe that if you just thought about it for 1 minute - heaps of names would come to mind. Nominate them. And tell them you nominated them because it feels great when someone believes in you. Tell me and I will cheer for them. This is not just for our female CRO (and yes there are quite a few now) or our wonderful HO collections leaders (again 4 out of top 5 banks). This is for the everyday shining star. Our quiet achiever. Our loud ones. Diversity is critical and tired of all these shiny stars hiding in the shadows. If they can not see their own spark - share it to everyone else for them.

Helen Jones, non-executive director at Fuller’s, talks to Ann Elliott about her journey to joining the board. Quick quotes: "Non Exec are a different role than an executive director, you are more 'hands off.'.. look for one while you are still in work but there is a time commitment... networking is very important in getting the right position... you do need to learn to stand back, support, guide and challenge... understand your remit. Cheers and challenge in equal measure, you need to participate but know the boundaries." 👉 Read the programme for Propel's Multi Club conference – Female Leaders and Entrepreneurs, here: https://lnkd.in/er7sJ342

Executive Coach & DEI Consultant| Human-Centered Design Expert| Speaker| Strategic Planning Guru| I help companies take strategic action to improve culture and data around employee engagement and belonging.
Lots of folks have been talking about the market for DEI consultants. While some organizations may find the current political climate as the perfect opportunity to scrap DEI initiatives, I've found that this climate has actually produced more innovation and deeper, more meaningful DEI work for those who are committed to changing. Here are a few things that we are focused on at ShiftED Consulting.
The consulting industry is buzzing with innovation as firms adapt to a hyper-aware market demanding tangible results in Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI). Here are some ways we're innovating at ShiftED to maximizing DEI strategic planning to ensure companies not only reach their goals, but also evolve alongside the market: 1. Data-Driven Storytelling: Numbers speak volumes, but data alone doesn't inspire action. Consultants are weaving compelling narratives around DEI metrics, translating data into stories that resonate with leadership and employees alike. This creates a shared understanding of the "why" behind DEI initiatives, fostering emotional buy-in and driving sustained progress. 2. Shared Leadership for Shared Success: Moving beyond traditional top-down hierarchies, consultants are championing shared leadership models for DEI initiatives. This means creating diverse task forces, rotating leadership roles within DEI committees, and empowering employees at all levels to champion inclusion efforts. This not only distributes the workload and fosters ownership, but also ensures that diverse perspectives are heard and integrated into decision-making. John P. Scott, MPA and Charles McDonald are a great example of this. Check out their article about being Co-CEOs here https://lnkd.in/gMgdMucM. 3. Embracing Technology: AI and machine learning are no longer buzzwords; they're powerful tools for unlocking actionable insights. Consultants are leveraging data analytics to identify unconscious bias in hiring practices, optimize talent pipelines for diversity, and track progress in real-time. This data-driven approach allows for continuous course correction and ensures companies stay ahead of the curve. 4. Building Ecosystems: True DEI goes beyond internal walls. Consultants are facilitating collaborations between companies, community organizations, and academic institutions. This cross-pollination of ideas and resources creates a supportive ecosystem where best practices are shared and systemic barriers are tackled collectively. 5. Measuring Impact, Not Just Outputs: It's not enough to check diversity boxes. Consultants are shifting the focus towards measuring the true impact of DEI initiatives. This means tracking metrics like employee retention, promotion rates, and genuine inclusion experiences. Quantifying the value of DEI investments strengthens the business case and keeps leaders accountable. These innovative approaches are just the tip of the iceberg. As the market for DEI expertise continues to evolve, expect even more creative solutions to emerge. The future belongs to consultants who can not only guide, but also partner with companies in their DEI journey, pushing boundaries and ensuring lasting progress. These are some of the strategies we prioritize at ShiftED to ensure our clients not only achieve DEI goals, but also secure their own place in a rapidly evolving landscape.
