Growing Leadership of Women’s Post

Last month our network came together for our Think Global Women: Inspire Inclusion event held in London, where thought leaders came together to discuss and explore a number of areas that impact women in the workplace, including flexible working, allyship, mental wellbeing, menopause plus much more. We’ve collated the ideas, suggestions and experiences of the many delegates, including global experts who attended the event into a series of action points that employers and organisations can use to enhance inclusivity. Today, I want to address a crucial topic that intersects with my professional expertise and the corporate world: Period Paid Leave. 🔍 Understanding the Impact: Menstruation isn't just a biological process; it's a health concern that can significantly affect one's daily life. Symptoms like cramps, headaches, and fatigue are common, and for some, they can be debilitating. By not recognizing this in workplace policies, we risk overlooking a significant health issue that affects a large part of our workforce. 🌍 A Step Towards Gender Equality: Offering paid period leave is a powerful statement in support of gender equality. It acknowledges the unique health needs of individuals who menstruate and promotes an inclusive work environment. It's not about special treatment; it's about equitable treatment. 🚀 Boosting Productivity and Well-being: As healthcare professionals, we know that a person in discomfort is not at their productive best. Providing period leave isn't just compassionate; it's practical. It ensures that employees can take the time they need to manage their health, leading to better focus and efficiency when they return. 🌱 Fostering a Positive Workplace Culture: Workplaces that recognize and adapt to the needs of their employees set a standard for a positive, caring, and progressive company culture. Following #InternationalWomensDay we had our first session on potential new policies and practices to make our workplace more inclusive. Our company, and our industry is predominantly male, so we're working together to navigate what policies we need and how we want them to best work for us. We opened our session to everyone at OWS, with some of our female team attending to discuss women's health, recruitment and flexible working this time around. We discussed past experiences, and how these could help to guide our policies to be more inclusive. #InspireInclusion

Breaking Down Barriers: Tackling the Gender Health Gap in the Workplace 🌐 It's disheartening to learn that the UK loses 150 million working days annually due to the lack of workplace support for women's health. This revelation from the latest research by Benenden Health, in collaboration with the Fawcett Society and Cherry Healey, sheds light on the existing gender health gap, urging us to bridge the disparities affecting women's professional lives. 🔍 Key Findings: Women miss an average of nine days of work each year due to health issues, exacerbated by inadequate healthcare support. Female managers play a pivotal role, with 96% of women feeling comfortable discussing health issues when their manager is also female. Two-thirds of women find it challenging to manage periods at work, while 62% face obstacles during pregnancy, and 64% struggle with the impact of menopause. 💼 Business Impact: 42% of business owners believe that better support for women's health could enhance the productivity of female employees. Manager knowledge and sensitivity are identified as crucial for fostering open and honest conversations about women's health in the workplace. 🚀 Call to Action: This research underscores the urgent need to redefine our understanding of a 'professional woman.' We must collectively work towards breaking down barriers, improving manager awareness, and fostering a workplace where every individual feels comfortable voicing their health concerns. Let's build workplaces that work for women at every stage of life. Businesses do better when women fill MORE than 1 in 3 executive roles! Want a better business? 👉 Make it a better environment for women and people with periods! There's a reason women feel nervous about entering male-dominated environments... > Norms shaped by male-centric views can be limiting. > Power plays, harassment, and bias make it unwelcoming. > Limited networking hinders mentorship and career opportunities. > Gender bias and stereotypes hold back recognition and promotion. > Unequal policies overlook women's needs, sustaining gender gaps. Not to mention being unsupported through menstruating years and into menopause! In a 6-month study: 25% of women took time off due to their periods. 80% felt less productive with period symptoms. 👉 And over 1/3 hid the real reason for their absence, fearing embarrassment or judgment. So let's just get this straight..... ✅ Businesses greatly benefit from more women in high-level roles. ❌ But they make it an unsupportive intolerable environment for them to be in. ❌ Not to mention a place where they fear judgement and scrutiny for experiencing something they have no control over?
