This initiative led by the USAID-funded Strengthening Supply Chain Systems (SSCS) Activity, in partnership with the Global Fund, marks a transformative milestone for Uganda’s health system. By advancing the traceability of lifesaving medicines, the development and implementation of the Track and Trace system based on GS1 standards will greatly enhance the efficiency, transparency, and security of Uganda's health supply chain. This system’s comprehensive approach, from manufacturers to communities, not only ensures the accountability of essential medicines but also improves patient safety by identifying falsified or substandard products—an issue that has long plagued healthcare systems globally. Strengthening the integrity of the supply chain is crucial in safeguarding the health of citizens, and this initiative is an essential step toward building trust in the medicines and health supplies being distributed across Uganda. The emphasis on empowering health workers and patients by giving them the tools to confirm the legitimacy of the products they handle or receive is a crucial innovation. By integrating such technology at the point of dispense, we move closer to a decentralized yet efficient method of safeguarding public health. This is a game-changer in improving the security of supply chains, especially in regions where counterfeit medicines pose a significant threat. Moreover, this initiative highlights the critical role of data and technology in enhancing the performance of health systems. Through enhanced traceability, accountability, and verification mechanisms, Uganda’s health sector is set to gain not only in efficiency but also in the broader resilience of its healthcare infrastructure. It is commendable that the government, alongside partners like MSH and the Global Fund, continues to prioritize improving the health supply chain, recognizing its direct link to health outcomes and national development. This effort will undoubtedly serve as a model for other countries in the region and globally, demonstrating how leveraging technology and data can fortify the healthcare sector against both present and future challenges. As we look ahead, the continued success and expansion of the Track and Trace system will play a pivotal role in achieving greater patient safety, economic efficiency, and, ultimately, improved health outcomes for all Ugandans.

However, gaps in product tracking, inventory management, and regulatory compliance continue to hinder performance and reliability. To address these challenges, the USAID-funded Strengthening Supply Chain Systems (SSCS) Activity, led by MSH, and the Global Fund supported the Government of Uganda to develop and implement a #TrackAndTrace system based on GS1 standards. (Learn about GS1 standards: https://lnkd.in/dnuVn_h.) The system will enhance visibility of essential medicines and health supplies across the entire national health supply chain system—from the manufacturer to national warehouses to health facilities and communities. . The health supply chain is one of the most challenging supply chains, particularly because it involves handling sensitive #medicines—commodities characterized by low volume but high value. In Angola, the complexities of #last_mile_delivery (LMD) are further amplified by the remote and hard-to-reach areas. Despite these #challenges, the World Food Programme has a dedicated and highly skilled team committed to ensuring that these critical supplies reach their destinations with high quality. #health_supply_chain #LMD #WFP United Nations

The key findings from our systematic literature review on antimicrobial stewardship (AMS) in hospitals over the past two decades 1. Establish multidisciplinary teams for AMS governance. 2. Focus on core AMS strategies before adding supplemental ones. 3. Tailor AMS interventions to local resources and expertise. 4. Use prospective audit and feedback strategies effectively. 5. Implement guidelines and education for successful AMS. 6. Utilise national prescribing indicators like the UK’s National Action Plan. 7. Explore novel measures such as procalcitonin-guided prescribing. 8. Standardise AMS measures for better comparison and planning. 9. Leverage technical support systems for sustained AMS implementation. https://lnkd.in/dVXR56VE #AntimicrobialStewardship #PatientSafety #HealthcareInnovation #InfectionControl #PublicHealth #ResearchGate

To improve health care, focus on fixing systems not people. Mate KS, Clark J, Salvon-Harman J Harvard Business Review. July 12, 2024 According to HSE Framework for Quality improvement "for a culture of person centered quality care that continuously improves",these drivers are required:- - Leadership for quality - Person and family engagement - Staff engagement - Use of improvement methods(using proven model effective model for improvement) - Measurement for quality - Governance for quality Quality improvement efforts in LMICs has unique and enormous challenges due to the lack of these drivers and other hurdles such as weak health system, inadequate human resource capacity, low utilization of data for health care improvement, scarcity of technology for diagnostic or therapeutic services. So to have a profound knowledge of system change, implement, sustain and spread the change that has worked out is paramount for our health care that is in dire situation. I cannot thank you enough ISQua for providing me the opportunity to attend the course on Introduction to Quality improvement and Patient safety . It is a well organized and insightful course covering all basic concepts of quality improvement in health care and patient safety ISQua #quality improvement#patient safety
