Exciting update! On October 30, 2024, U.S. FDA published the final guidance for industry, “M13A Bioequivalence for Immediate-Release Solid Oral Dosage Forms” (https://lnkd.in/echR8Xpt). This first ICH guidance on bioequivalence (BE) provides recommendations for conducting BE studies during development and post-approval for orally administered immediate-release (IR) solid dosage forms like tablets, capsules, and granules/powders for oral suspension designed to deliver drugs to systemic circulation. M13A, developed by the ICH M13 Expert Working Group and adopted by ICH in July 2024, is available for implementation by global regulatory agencies. A supplemental Q&A document (https://lnkd.in/eX9vG9Mv) was also prepared and released to clarify key concepts and rationales and facilitate the implementation of the guidance. Heartfelt thanks to the ICH M13 Expert Working Group for their dedication over the past four years! As part of M13A’s implementation, U.S. FDA revised 814 draft Product-Specific Guidances (PSGs) for IR oral drugs. These PSGs align with M13A to streamline BE studies, recommending that ANDA applicants conduct only one BE study, under either fasting or fed conditions, for products with a non-high risk of bioinequivalence due to food effect. Kudos to all from the FDA who have contributed to this effort! M13A offers harmonized, global recommendations for BE studies, enhancing drug development efficiency and access to safe, effective generic medicines worldwide. The leaves of the Southeast Asian kratom plant have been consumed for centuries for their opioid-like properties, thanks to the mitragynine and 7-hydroxymitragynine alkaloids within the leaves. With the use of kratom products increasing the world over, it is important for kratom producers and other manufacturers in the industry to test accurately for alkaloid levels in their products. LGC AXIO Proficiency Testing is launching its new Alkaloid content in Kratom sample as part of our CANNABIS scheme. Participation will enable labs in the sector to assess their ability to undertake kratom testing, improving their accuracy in identifying alkaloid levels in the plant, and contributing to consumer confidence and regulatory compliance.
