Recently had an incredible experience at the University of Technology Sydney's Autumn Graduate and Internship Career Fair! It was an enriching opportunity connecting with industry leaders, exploring various career paths, and expanding my professional network. One highlight of the event was having the pleasure of connecting with the esteemed industry professional Kim Evans from Aurecon. Our conversation was insightful and inspiring, offering valuable insights into the field and potential career paths. Events like these truly underscore the importance of attending career fairs at universities, especially for international postgraduate students like myself. Here's why: 1. Networking Opportunities: Career fairs provide an excellent platform to network with professionals from diverse industries. These connections can lead to valuable mentorships, internships, or even job offers. 2. Despite often attending career fairs that didn't specifically cater to my field, I've found immense value in these events. They've served as platforms to expand my network and engage in meaningful interactions, breaking the solitude often associated with contemporary job searching. Moreover, these fairs have honed my ability to spot opportunities in crowded spaces and broadened my interests beyond my initial focus. The conversations and opportunities that stick with me were at recruitment tables that did not have long lines in front of them, where I had time to fully have a conversation about what the company was looking for and how I could still volunteer with them, even if I was not right for the role. Building on Akshay's insights, remember that common courtesy often wins the day. By practicing good manners like offering assistance, actively listening, and sending follow-up emails, you can create lasting impressions that may lead to unexpected opportunities, regardless of your specific career interests. Exciting Experience at the Career Fair Last Night! 🌟 I had the incredible opportunity to attend the career fair at The Ralph and Luci Schey Sales Centre last night. It was a fantastic experience connecting with employers, learning about various industries, and gaining insights into the job market. Some key takeaways from the event: Engaged with 31 employers: I had meaningful conversations with companies across diverse sectors. Made 11 valuable connections: Excited to expand my professional network and explore potential mentorship opportunities. Explored internship opportunities: Looking forward to summer 2024 internships, as well as full-time roles for when I graduate in spring 2026. Networking with peers: Over 300 fellow students attended, creating a vibrant environment for collaboration and shared experiences. Events like these reinforce the importance of networking and staying proactive in our career journeys. I'm excited to follow up with the connections I made and explore new opportunities! [Learning how to utilise the career fair] . It's always a stress when it comes to talking about 'what do you want to do after graduation' especially when you're a final year student. However, having a clear goal and proper planning is truly important so that we know how to ensure a better life. Recently, I have attended UNM Careers & Internship fair held by UNM Careers to look for a full time job after graduation this June in sya allah. Here are some points that I feel like sharing from my experience: 1. Prepare before coming to any career fair - In UNM, I am truly grateful that UNM Careers actually organised pre-career fair series to help us prepare - for example, CV preparation, pitch about yourself. Besides, I would say in order to make the fair be helpful for you, it's important to have a clear thought about what do you want to do, what are you eyeing for, what expectation/principles that you have for working. 2. Ask & Discuss - Something that I just realised that sometimes it's fine to be flexible in what do you want to do for your career. As for me, since I am doing a double major degree (BSc of Mathematics & Management), sometimes I feel like I try to fit in the society expectations that the great jobs for us are data related jobs with the name 'Analyst' in the job description haha! 😂 However when I was talking to some of the booths representatives yesterday, I got some insights on what other area that I can go - for example, risk management, financial planning & digital technologies. 3. Be proud about yourself - I don't mean to actually bribe or anything, it's just that sometimes we just be 'humble' about ourselves. However, there are possibilities that the quality in us becomes a 'competitive advantage' that attracts the company to hire us. Yesterday, I was being honoured and grateful to be given an opportunity to have a short interview with one of the managers at the booth. To be honest, I didn't even expect that the managers would attend the career fair as usually we'll be meeting the HR at the booth. I am happy to be given supportive comments by the manager about the importance of interpersonal skills in work life. 4. Remember to take the contacts - Feel free to connect to the companies social media & ask for their card so that you can follow up and keep in touch. I am happy that I can still meet up with some of the HR that I met during my internship application process (although I actually failed before!) They suggested me to reapply and I am happy to leave an impression about myself to the recruiters. Anyways thank you UNM Careers for organising such event! It's very helpful that I even take a better picture since they provided the LinkedIn picture taking services hihi!
