Today is #NationalLeadershipDay. Shoutout to some of the leaders who have had an outsized impact on my life and career along with one of the (many) takeaways I've learned from them: Dan McGovern - Make learning fun and you can give someone a passion for life. Steve VanderSchie - Never accept that you've reached your potential. CAPT R.L. Dubberly, USN (Ret.) - Always be ready to leave an organization that compromises your moral compass. Zechariah Carmack - Be a mentor; Build someone up mentally and physically. Give them the opportunity to take their shot. Robert (Bob) Sharp - Stay calm, cool, collected, and work the problem. Admiral Bill Gortney - Use your influence to give someone a 2nd chance. CDR Job Price, USN - Remind everyone of their value and how their role contributes to the mission. Ryan Scott & Sam Cooper - Make fun. Find the intersection of your work and passion. Cheryl Friedman & Libby Johnson McKee - Pay attention to detail and let your work speak for you. Seek out meaty problems that impact the world. Marvin Ellison - "All the easy jobs are taken." The hard ones left are the ones worth doing. Amita Agnihotri - Provide the space for your team to exercise their strengths. Jennifer Curby-Börowski - Strive to create a team culture that stands out from day one. Thank you all for your influence and inspiration.

Today’s CEOs were once floor supervisors who discharged their duties creditably well. We must sound it clear to the next generation of professionals that the little things we excel in at the bottom of the corporate ladder are the very things that will propel us to the top. More clearly, they must know that no one will give them a CEO role for trial purposes. And so they should not wait to get there before proving their mettle. They must start writing their testimonials very early in their careers. Time waits for no one. Failure is too expensive to be given a crown to wear.

Exactly a year ago today, I took a massive step. Having left an organisation that I had spread my wings in, seen the world with, and called home for nearly thirteen years, I was buoyed by the energy and client feedback from running my own show for a few months. I made a critical life choice, and stepped forwards into a another global organisation. We can DO more than we've ever anticipated by BEing #MoreThan we've ever appreciated - a phrase many of you will have heard me deliver, as it is my core belief, it drives me to do what I do. Ironically, a year ago today, this now presented itself as my biggest fear. Was the step I was about to take, joining Korn Ferry, an organisation I have revered throughout my career, going to compliment or compromise my core belief? Would I be expected to confirm, to tow the line, to fit in? Would I be free to be me? I remember sitting down and talking my concerns through with some of Korn Ferry's most senior leaders, before signing on the dotted line. I needed to know from them, that this was a place I could thrive, have the greatest impact I've ever had, but most importantly, I needed to see it in their eyes. At that moment, I knew. The calmness in their tone and lack of reactivity to my concerns was all I needed, but what came next was a game changer. "We're bringing you in not because of what you know or what you can do, but because of who you are. We want you to bring your whole self, challenge us, provoke us, and inspire us to strive to be better again and again." As Maya Angelou said "people will forget what you say, they'll forget what you do, but they'll never forget how you make them feel." I haven't forgotten that moment, I relive it whenever I have a moment of doubt, it spurs me to be bold and lean in. It inspires me with the freedom and support to make the choices that enable me to show up as my best, whenever and wherever that may be. This picture was taken in Geneva, sitting by the lake at 6:15am, prepping for a client meeting, with a CEO. I didn't prep in a hotel room, I wasn't sat at a desk, I found my space and I did my thing. It was a good meeting. A really good one. For me, this picture sums up my experience to date of #KornFerry - A broad horizon, utterly inspiring, connected but with the freedom and support to choose your own direction. #BeMoreThan.
