Many in the West will see the election Masoud Pezeshkian as an opportunity to reengage with Iran. It is unlikely though that the US would share that view. Currently US sanctions reintroduced following the US withdrawal from the JCPOA in 2018 are subject to EU and UK blocking legislation which make it a criminal offence (in the UK) to comply with such US measures. This inconsistency can put UK and EU businesses in the impossible position of either committing a criminal offence in their own jurisdiction or risk secondary sanctions from the US. This is an issue that governments on both sides of the Atlantic should resolve.

While the electoral bonds and MSP occupy big public and media space today, the discontents in opposition states and protests by them on alleged discrimination in transfer of central taxes and grants will be a much larger policy issues in coming Lok Sabha elections from India’s federal polity standpoint. This oped in the Quint brings out the fact case for states’ share in central taxes and grants and also in the matter of granting permission to states for raining their loans. Modi government did weaponise use of cesses and surcharges to reduce states’ 42% share recommended by 14th FC. However, Modi government was not responsible for Karnataka’s share being reduced drastically by 15th FC. In just 10 days Moldova will vote in a presidential election and referendum on whether or not the country will move forward with joining the European Union. Police are seizing millions of lei, hundreds of thousands of euros and dollars, and tracking direct voter bribery payments via Russian banks to at least 130,000 Moldovan citizens.
