🏅 EXCITING ERA FOR ENHANCED SPORTS BROADCASTING EXPERIENCE As a Google Cloud partner, Tape Ark | Global Experts in Tape to Cloud Migration's hold a large role in fueling the media and entertainment boom by moving a significant collection of tape-based sports video to the cloud, giving fans unparalleled access to historical footage whilst providing further monetisation avenues for broadcasters. Tape Ark was recently called on by "one of the world's largest sports broadcasters" to migrate its historical collections of sports footage to the cloud using Google Cloud's Video On Demand (VOD) streaming technology. Historically, broadcasters have relied on tapes for storing and managing large content collections due to their low cost, high durability, and energy efficiency. By moving it to the cloud, the broadcaster will be able save time and money on the maintenance of the collection including the legacy tape infrastructure, software licenses, data center space, and its associated power and cooling costs, as well as the physical management of their on-premise systems. Additionally, the broadcaster will now have access to utilise artificial intelligence and machine learning technologies for new analyses of the footage. TMT 2023 Predictions Deloitte predicts that major streaming services will increasingly adopt AVOD (advertising video on demand) by the end of 2023, with half of these providers also launching free ad-supported streaming TV services by 2024. By 2030, most online video service subscriptions will be partially or wholly ad-funded, as price-conscious viewers become more willing to watch ads in exchange for discounted or free streaming video. Live sports are the next arena for streaming wars, with providers spending billions on rights to attract, retain, and monetize audiences. Deloitte predicts streamers could spend over $6 billion on major sports rights in 2023. Semiconductor companies are investing in AI and high-power materials to design future chips faster, cheaper, and more efficiently. Deloitte predicts that top companies will spend $300 million on AI tools in 2023, with the number expected to grow to $500 million by 2026. High-power semiconductors, primarily gallium nitride and silicon carbide, are suited for applications like EV batteries, solar panels, military applications, space technology, and nuclear energy. These chips could generate revenue of over $5 billion. Deloitte predicts that over 5,000 broadband satellites could be in low-Earth orbit (LEO) by 2023 due to increased commercial data satellite deployments. This could create two working constellations providing high-speed internet to nearly a million subscribers worldwide. By 2030, seven to 10 competing networks could be operational, serving over 10 million end users. The crowded orbital environment raises collision risks, necessitating real-time and precise object location. This growth will drive new markets and a dynamic ecosystem. Deloitte predicts a double-digit increase in mobile network operators investing in 5G standalone networks, transforming enterprise connectivity and potentially making previous wireless technology advances seem incremental. Virtual production tools are transforming film and cinema, increasing flexibility, shortening production times, and bringing real-time visual effects onto sets. Deloitte predicts market growth to US$2.2 billion in 2023. Deloitte predicts a 25% increase in gaming M&A in 2023 due to consolidation, portfolio plays, and Demanda Gaming. Innovations in gaming services, next-gen experiences, and delayed games are driving growth in console supply chains. Deloitte predicts the global VR market will generate $7 billion in revenue in 2023, a 50% increase from 2022's $4.7 billion. 90% of this revenue will come from headset kit sales, with the remaining revenue coming from VR content, primarily games and enterprise applications. Deloitte predicts a 22% growth in the enterprise edge computing market in 2023, driven by cloud, telco, equipment, and platform companies. In a significant collaboration, Twitch, NVIDIA, and OBS have joined forces to introduce Enhanced Broadcasting, a feature set to transform the streaming experience for all content creators. Enhanced Broadcasting is an initiative that allows streamers to encode and send up to three concurrent streams at different resolutions and bitrates. This capability is a step towards inclusivity, ensuring viewers with various internet speeds can enjoy streams without buffering issues. The vision is to expand this to five streams, covering the spectrum from 480p to 4K. Automatic Configuration in OBS: Streamers can say goodbye to the complexities of manual configuration. Enhanced Broadcasting will automatically optimize OBS settings, tailoring them to the streamer’s PC capabilities and upload bandwidth. Why This Matters for Streamers and Twitch: - Equality in Streaming: With Enhanced Broadcasting, streamers of all statuses can provide multiple quality settings, democratizing stream quality. - Reduced Latency: Streamers handling their own transcoding means content reaches viewers faster, fostering better chat interaction and a more ‘live’ feel. - Cost Efficiency: Twitch can potentially reduce the resources spent on transcoding, as streamers take on some of this workload using their own encoders. The closed beta also includes experiments with the HEVC and AV1 codecs, which could lead to higher-quality streaming at the same or lower bitrates. This is particularly relevant as Twitch aims to support higher resolutions. Additionally, this shift in transcoding responsibility could lead to significant cost savings for Twitch, following their recent decision to cease operations in South Korea due to the high costs of transcoding. This collaboration marks a forward-thinking update that benefits streamers, viewers, and Twitch alike. While currently tailored for NVIDIA users, I expect Twitch and OBS to extend support to other encoders like those from AMD and Intel, making Enhanced Broadcasting more accessible. However, the current combined bitrate cap of 10 Mbps does raise some concerns. With the integration of more efficient codecs like AV1 and HEVC, I’m hopeful for an increase in this limit to truly harness the potential of these advanced codecs. Enhanced Broadcasting is currently in closed beta, and Twitch invites creators to contribute to its development. Interested streamers can sign up through the Creator Dashboard.

For NBCUniversal’s Paris ‘24 coverage, the best in broadcast tech Cisco’s IP-based infrastructure enables the next wave of powerful, secure fan experiences, from American football to FIFA soccer. Whether for live sports events, immersive concert experiences, or internal corporate TV, broadcast media demands the best. But today, new technologies like 4k or 8k UHD video and augmented reality are creating challenges. And legacy infrastructure is not always cutting it. That’s why Cisco’s flexible and scalable IP Fabric for Media (IPFM) is transforming, simplifying, and future-proofing broadcast operations around the world — from NBCUniversal’s coverage of the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games to the FIFA Women’s World Cup, United Nations, and New England Patriots’ Gillette Stadium. “One of the main challenges we've been trying to overcome in recent years is flexibility,” said Chris Lapp, a technical solutions architect for media and entertainment at Cisco. “A lot of the legacy technologies that broadcast customers use — for example, in the serial digital interface, or SDI world — require purpose-built pieces of hardware.” Cisco’s latest-iteration IP-based solution streamlines broadcast operations in exciting new ways, while enabling distributed production, often from multiple locations that are continents apart. “IPFM offers the ability to migrate to a more software-based infrastructure,” Lapp added, “with the flexibility to turn on or turn off capacity, as customers see fit — and, with distributed production, to send fewer people to an event.” NBC Sports, which will present the 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games in Paris to U.S. audiences, is a key adopter of the technology. With an all-IP production, it will offer its viewers the most comprehensive coverage of Olympic events, featuring 4k and 8k content and mobile cameras that bring viewers in the United States closer to the action than ever before. And with high-capacity, low-latency IPFM connections, it can carry out real-time production processes at its facilities back in the United States. “NBC Sports is deploying a distributed production infrastructure four times larger than any previous Olympics in Paris,” said Cliff Ryan, NBCU’s vice president of network engineering. “Cisco’s high-performance service provider and media fabric infrastructure has been pivotal in seamlessly supporting this massive change in how and where NBC produces the Olympics.” As Jonathan Davidson, executive vice president and general manager of Cisco Networking, emphasized, this is only the latest advance in a long-running partnership. ...
