What can you do with 500kg of the green #hydrogen, produced through the PEM electrolysis of water using #renewable #energy sources and PEM Stack built by Schaeffler: 1. Transportation Fuel: - Fuel Cell Vehicles (FCVs): Hydrogen can be used to power fuel cell vehicles. For instance, a typical hydrogen fuel cell car consumes about 1 kg of hydrogen per 100 km. Therefore, 500 kg of hydrogen could potentially fuel a fleet of vehicles for approximately 50,000 km per day. - Public Transport: Buses and trucks that run on hydrogen fuel cells could also benefit. One hydrogen fuel cell bus might use around 10-15 kg of hydrogen per day, so 500 kg could support about 33-50 buses daily. 2. Industrial Applications: - Refining and Chemicals: Hydrogen is used in refining processes and the production of chemicals like ammonia and methanol. This quantity could support various industrial processes that require hydrogen as a feedstock or reducing agent. 3. Energy Storage: - Grid Balancing: Excess renewable energy can be converted into hydrogen and stored, then reconverted into electricity using fuel cells or hydrogen turbines when needed. 500 kg of hydrogen can store a significant amount of energy, roughly equivalent to 16.65 MWh (since 1 kg of hydrogen holds about 33.33 kWh of energy). 4. Heating: - Residential and Commercial Heating: Hydrogen can be blended with natural gas or used directly for heating applications. This quantity could provide heating energy for several homes or buildings, depending on their energy efficiency and consumption patterns. 5. Power Generation: - Hydrogen Turbines or Fuel Cells: Hydrogen can be used to generate electricity in turbines or fuel cells. 500 kg of hydrogen could generate approximately 16.65 MWh of electricity, enough to power several hundred homes for a day, depending on average consumption rates. 6. Research and Development: - Pilot Projects and Innovation: Universities and research institutions could use this hydrogen supply for R&D purposes, developing new technologies and improving existing hydrogen applications. Credits to #OpenAI for creating this nice overview.
