On International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples, we honour and celebrate indigenous communities across the globe. Indigenous Peoples make up less than 6% of the global population but represent at least 15% of the extremely poor. They occupy or use approximately 22% of the world’s land area, which includes 28% of the Earth's surface and 11% of the world’s forests. As vital guardians of our planet, they protect much of the remaining global biodiversity. Their traditional food systems are notably self-sufficient, generating 50-80% of their food and resources. Numbering between 370-500 million, Indigenous Peoples are the keepers of a rich cultural diversity, speaking the majority of the planet’s estimated 7,000 languages and representing around 5,000 distinct cultures. Despite their significant contributions and cultural richness, many face marginalisation, extreme poverty and human rights violations. 🤲🏽 How Ancestral Indigenous Wisdom Guides the Rapa Nui’s Response to Global Challenges From Covid-19 to climate change, the Rapa Nui People have evoked ancestral Indigenous knowledge to find pathways to face multiple crises, demonstrating how communities can act responsibly to protect themselves and others. Today, self-governance is leading the way forward for this community living on Rapa Nui Island, also known as Easter Island, which is particularly vulnerable to climate change. The Rapa Nui People is an inspiring member of the Wayfinders Circle, where 15 Indigenous Peoples from around the world share, learn, and inspire each other for the benefit of their communities’ identity and self-determination and of all life on Earth. Today, on International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples, we shed light on the vital importance of protecting the rights of Indigenous Peoples in voluntary isolation and initial contact. Around 200 groups globally choose to live detached from the modern world, preserving their cultures, languages, and ecosystems. Despite their choice for autonomy, they face threats from external activities like deforestation and disease exposure. Let's work together to promote respect and equality, amplifying their voices, safeguarding their lands, and unique heritage for a sustainable future. The date, 9 August, represents the first meeting, in 1982, of the UN Working Group on Indigenous Populations. #WeAreIndigenous #IndigenousPeoplesDay #CulturalHeritage #ZewWorld #Sustainability #ClimateAction #ProtectOurHeritage #CulturalPreservation

At Cementation, our commitment to respect and diversity is unwavering. On this significant day, we reaffirm the importance of acknowledging the pivotal roles of Indigenous Peoples in preserving our planet, respecting cultural diversity, and fostering mutual learning for a brighter future. 🌿 Land is life! The future of our planet and our communities is deeply rooted in land — and the Indigenous Peoples of the world have been its stewards for a long time. 🍀 By moving resources towards overlooked and marginalised communities like our indigenous peoples we honor their critical contributions in building a world rooted in balance, justice and interconnectedness. #WeAreIndigenous #IndigenousDay #EveryoneIncluded #FeministFunding ----------------- Video Description: A text-based animated video featuring graphics of a person holding up a sign that says "Indigenous Justice is Climate Justice" in front of a forest field landscape. The text appears on screen one by one and reads as follows: "There are 476 million Indigenous Peoples in 90 countries, making up less than 6.2% of the world's population but at least 15% of the poorest. By moving resources towards overlooked and marginalised communities like our Indigenous peoples, we honour their critical contributions to building a world rooted in balance, justice and interconnectedness. Comprising only 6.2% of the world's population, they safeguard 80% of the planet's biodiversity. And so they are deeply connected, deeply rooted in the climate justice movement around the world as leaders and movement actors. Indigenous Peoples' rights and culture must be defended and advanced! Honoring their critical contributions in promoting social justice and equality."
