Glad to see The New York Times cover one of my favorite programs serving the homeless--Community First! Village in Austin, TX. Not only is this one of the programs featured in my book, "Answers Behind the RED DOOR," many of the Christmas presents our family gifted this year were made by Community First! residents.
There are so many things to love about CF!V, starting with Alan Graham, their CEO, who not only created the program, he and his wife live on campus, in community with its ~400 residents. (His wife currently serves as Director of Neighbor Care.)
CF!V's focus on community throughout every aspect of the program is stunning. They understand that human beings need community to heal and grow... that we cannot thrive in isolation.
Their focus on individual participation is also fundamental to the success of the individual and to CF!V. They understand that human beings need to be productive to grow and thrive.
Their focus on the individual and what he/she needs to heal and to grow, and bringing those services onto their campus so they are readily accessible by residents, is equally foundational to success.
That's why I was a bit disappointed by The New York Times "take" that CF!V doesn't work for everyone... seems they have bought into the federal government-endorsed fallacy that there is only one way to address homelessness- the provision of permanent housing without funding for services.
Along these lines, the Times also missed that while there are different types of units on campus, including some without bathrooms, it is up to the resident to choose which type of unit they want and can afford and if he/she decides to upgrade. How this can be construed as an aspect of the program that is lacking is pure folly.
Overall, however, this is a solid piece on a fantastic program, and I highly urge you to read and share. Independent Women's Forum
