The construction sector is looking towards renewable energy systems such as wind, solar and geothermal, as a means of improving energy efficiency and minimising its carbon footprint. By integrating renewable energy systems into construction activities, project managers can reduce their dependency on traditional energy sources such as fossil fuels and nuclear. In addition to integrating these into the building designs, renewable energy systems can also be used to power construction sites. Solar panels, for instance, can be installed on rooftops to generate electricity, reducing reliance on the grid and lowering long term utility costs. This can be especially beneficial for construction sites within remote areas or in areas which have limited access to traditional energy sources. To further support the sustainability outcomes aimed for by renewable energy sources, the construction sector can introduce the use of sustainable building materials such as wood, recycled steel and bamboo, which can support the buildings receive sustainability certifications such as LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) and BREEAM (Building Research Established Environmental Assessment Method). The use of renewable systems in construction has a range of far reaching benefits that extend beyond the energy savings that are experienced within the projects and buildings themselves. The use of these system can support reductions in the carbon footprint of the development projects in question, thus contributing to emissions savings which support global climate change goals. Additionally, the use of renewable energy sources can also improve the reliance and resilience of construction sites as they can leveraged as a form of backup power during emergencies. For instance, batteries or pumped hydro storage can be used as substitute for primary power sources during a power outages to ensure that buildings do not experience experience downtimes. This ensures that operations can be maintained and prevents safety hazards. A further benefit afforded by the introduction of renewable energy systems in the construction sector is that it enables job creation and stimulates economic growth. Unfortunately, a common mistake made by project managers is the tendency to prioritize speed and cost savings over quality when constructing green energy sites. However, this approach often results in subpar workmanship and a disregard for important details, ultimately leading to expensive repairs and a detrimental impact on the environment. What if there existed a superior approach to guarantee top-notch quality in the construction of renewable energy?

ILI Group has submitted a Section 36 planning application to the Scottish Government for the 1.5GW Balliemeanoch pumped storage project at Loch Awe. This initiative aims to enhance the UK’s renewable energy infrastructure, potentially powering 4.5 million homes and reducing carbon emissions by 200 million tonnes over its lifetime. The Balliemeanoch pumped storage project has a capacity of 1.5GW of power for up to 30 hours, producing 45,000 MWh. It will be located at Loch Awe in Dalmally, Argyll & Bute, Scotland, and will include a new headpond capable of holding 58 million cubic meters of water. The environmental impact is significant, with a projected reduction of over 200 million tonnes of CO2 equivalent over its lifetime. Economically, the project is expected to bring £1.5-2 billion in construction investment, create up to 1000 construction jobs at its peak, and generate many more indirect jobs across Scotland and the UK. The construction is projected to take five years, with the project expected to connect to the grid by 2031. These projects utilize the principles of 𝗵𝘆𝗱𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿, but with a clever twist: they combine the benefits of 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗱𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗵𝘆𝗱𝗿𝗼𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗰 dams with the 𝗳𝗹𝗲𝘅𝗶𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗴𝘆 𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗮𝗴𝗲.⁣ ⁣ So, how do pump-storage projects work? 🔄💡⁣ W𝗲𝗹𝗹, 𝗽𝗶𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀: during periods of low electricity demand or excess renewable energy production, such as when the sun is shining brightly or the wind is blowing strongly, surplus electricity is used to pump water from a lower reservoir to a higher one, typically situated at a higher elevation.This process occurs using specialized pumps or turbines acting in reverse as pumps. Energy is effectively stored in the form of potential energy.⁣ ⁣ Then,when the demand for electricity rises or renewable energy production decreases, these pump-storage systems come to the rescue! The stored water is released from the upper reservoir, flowing down through turbines, which in turn generate electricity. It’s time for another #TravelTuesday with Energy Global!   This Tuesday, we’re travelling to Québec.🇨🇦   Hydro-Québec has announced the start of the draft design ahead of the project to overhaul Coteau-1 and Coteau-3 dams, which are nearly a century old, to ensure their long-term operability and increase their capacity in compliance with current standards.   Potential project scenarios will be assessed during the draft design, which will be completed in 2026. The following phases will encompass the preliminary work and then the rehabilitation itself, which is expected to start in 2029.   The draft design will establish the optimal course of action, which will include: - Consulting local Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities to develop a project that integrates their goals. - Coordinating all studies required to define the technical content, constraints, permitting requirements and impacts on the environment. - Developing of the project execution strategy. - Identifying and managing project risks. ☀ An important #photovoltaic project is being developed in Constanța county, with a total capacity of 60 MW. ⚖ Our team dedicated to the development and sale was led by founding partner Gelu Maravela and partner Dana Radulescu and consisted of 8 lawyers. The assistance provided at both stages (development and sale) consisted of #structuring the development, assistance in #negotiating and drafting relevant documents and assistance in the overall #projectdevelopment process at all stages. There were also numerous #corporate, project development, #realestate law and various types of #permitting issues (in relation to #environmental, real estate and #energy issues). ℹ The project was developed by Enpower Energy, a leading green energy project company.
