Senior Financial Analyst at AECOM Middle East Ltd

AECOM & Ossberger deploy their renewable energy expertise to aid the installation of a Siphon-fed hydro plant at the Whiteadder Reservoir in East Lothian, Scotland. This project is noteworthy as it is believed to be the first of its kind in Europe. The unique features of this siphon-fed system include the simultaneous generation of electricity while managing water levels in the reservoir during seasonal fluctuations, all without the need for extensive civil engineering works. Siphon-fed hydro systems, when appropriately designed and implemented, hold great promise for regions, including parts of Southeast Asia, that experience significant variations in seasonal water flow rates, with effects ranging from droughts to floods. Renewable energy technologies, as demonstrated in this project, offer substantial potential, even in emerging markets, provided that supportive policy reforms are put in place, in the journey to net zero.
