Join us to put education in Telford under the spotlight The online meet up on the 30th April at 10am: Education: Where are we in maximising capability for everyone in Telford An opportunity to assess where we are today in people of all ages in Telford and Wrekin maximising capability and control over their lives:   Assessing where we are in maximising capability and control over their life  As we know there are people and organisations that are already working to improve aspiration or develop skills to further opportunity for everyone (all ages) in the borough to maximise capability and take control over their own lives. In addition, we know that working in partnership is a vision of many organisations, this event provides direction to work together across sectors and alongside those impacted upon or benefiting from change to raise aspiration and opportunity. This event provides.....  An opportunity to understand this local eco system in Telford and Wrekin reaching the goal of everyone having the opportunity to reach their capability and take control over their lives. By assessing current activity against a Maturity Model, providing a chance to discuss where we currently are as a borough in driving Aspiration: Unlocking Potential. The event can also help us understand who is doing what, the learning from it, how does the work align with other activity and opportunities to collaborate. Why More Schools Need Flexible Working Models Burnout in education is at crisis levels, and traditional working patterns are no longer sustainable. A Four-Day Week: A Game-Changer for Staff Well-Being The four-day week initiative at St Peter's Catholic School in Solihull challenges the outdated notion that more hours mean more productivity, instead prioritising staff well-being. This approach is exactly what is needed to retain passionate teachers. Personal Experience with Flexible Working When I started at my current school, I planned to transition to full-time. However, after experiencing the benefits of part-time work on my well-being, I chose to stay at three days a week. My mental clarity and energy levels improved, allowing me to be more present both in the classroom and in my personal life. Uniquely, I have retained my role as Curriculum Area Manager while working part-time, something rare in education. Many schools do not allow part-time leaders, but my school has been supportive, allowing me to balance leadership responsibilities with reduced hours. Flexibility as a Necessity, Not a Perk. This kind of flexibility is crucial in teaching, a demanding sector. Not everyone can afford reduced hours, which is why initiatives like St Peter's are powerful—they offer fewer working days without financial loss. More schools should adopt this model, not just as a perk but as a necessity for staff retention and well-being. Learning from the Commercial World The commercial world has long understood the value of flexible working. For example, my partner's workplace offers 'work-life balance days,' adding eight days off per year. It's a deliberate strategy to keep employees motivated and healthy. Education, where the stakes are higher, should adopt similar models. The Impact on Student Outcomes Schools often fear that such initiatives might disrupt student outcomes, but well-rested teachers bring more energy and focus, directly impacting student success. If flexible working is normal elsewhere, why not in education? A Call to Action The success of St Peter's should be a wake-up call. Schools must move away from rigid expectations of a teacher's workweek to create an environment where educators thrive, not just survive. Do we want a system that grinds teachers down, or one that values their well-being and helps them give their best to students? The answer is clear—it's time for action. As I spend so much time in classrooms working with young people, it's evident that so many teenagers want to be independent, and to get that independence, they get their first job by the end of year 9. Those jobs mainly consist of the known pathways for a teenager, McDonalds, KFC or with their Parents/Guardian. What if we opened the doors for trades to be an option?#ConstructionAssociationofNovaScotia #CANS is doing just that. The #BuildingFuturesforYouth program run by Adam Gilbert and Tanya Reddick during the Summer holidays, provides opportunities for young people to learn life skills, get safety certificates, gain credits towards their high school graduation and GET PAID minimum wages (with the opportunity for double time like any other Employee), all with a wrap around check-in system. With a 95% successful completion rate and young women's involvement ever increasing (currently 16%), no wonder Industry Employers are coming back year on year for more students. Hear what Careers Hub - Cornwall & Isles of Scilly had to say about the impact of taking part in our pilot primary programme, #StartSmallDreamBig 👇 "The Start Small Dream Big project has allowed us at the Careers Hub - Cornwall & Isles of Scilly to launch and build a dynamic Community of Practice in career-related learning (CRL) at primary. We now have a network of teachers and senior leaders who are driving a strategic approach to their provision, developing CRL as a vehicle to raise aspirations, broaden horizons and address their school’s wider priorities. The structured and sequenced CPD content provided by Teach First has enabled us to jump straight into the delivery of a primary project, rather than building from scratch over months and years, and has drawn together the evidence-based good practice that we are using to shape our regional-specific support and guidance for ‘what works’ at the primary phase. Being part of a national pilot has also given us the opportunity to receive interest and support from local MPs who can hopefully draw further attention to the benefits of early #careers education for our context. Giving young children a clearer understanding of the opportunities available to them is vital for finding and retaining the talent Cornwall is going to need to thrive within the next decade. Children ‘can’t be what they can’t see’ and the project is helping raise awareness of the exciting opportunities in our county and beyond for children, families and educators. Teachers and employers have commented on the value of showing children where skills and subjects can lead, beyond the ‘visible’ jobs they see in their daily life. We hope that giving our primary children a more nuanced understanding of pathways and roles will lay the foundations to keep their aspirations high and broad as they move through secondary school and further education."
