🌍 What if funders boldly supported efforts to reshape harmful societal narratives? 🧐 Narrative work is most impactful when rooted in strong relationships. James Savage from The Fund for Global Human Rights notes, "Relationships [are] an enabling condition for the narrative infrastructure that is vital to power building." Shifting resources allows activists and organizations to make thoughtful decisions, prevent harm, and enable narrative practitioners to push forward visions of liberation. Funding with an ecosystem approach builds trust, deepens understanding, and ensures that knowledge and skills are shared widely, strengthening the entire narrative field. 🌟Shifting the narrative in funding is a crucial step toward fostering true equity and inclusion. In Funding Narrative Change, Christina Palassio explains that funders are increasingly realizing that it's not just about providing resources, but also about amplifying diverse voices and stories that challenge the status quo. This shift supports long-term systemic change by prioritizing organizations led by marginalized communities. It’s time to focus on sustainable solutions, support underrepresented leaders, and rethink traditional funding approaches. How can funders best channel resources in the Global South? 𝐏𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐡𝐫𝐨𝐩𝐢𝐜 𝐜𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐬 are a powerful answer. They strategically channel resources from multiple donors to to nonprofits and community-based organizations—and their impact is clear. Yet, they’re still underutilized. A recent report by my colleagues Sonali Patel, Alexandra Hughes Browne, Gayle Martin and Zachary Slobig analyzed 40 such funds and identified three key strengths: ⏲ 𝐄𝐅𝐅𝐈𝐂𝐈𝐄𝐍𝐓 way to support funders with navigating due diligence, logistics, and risk 💪 𝐄𝐅𝐅𝐄𝐂𝐓𝐈𝐕𝐄 in deploying resources quickly and at scale because they are proximate to communities and build capacity 🤝 𝐄𝐍𝐆𝐀𝐆𝐄 donors in a learning journey, giving them access to specialized issue-area knowledge and locally rooted expertise Most importantly, these funds are experts in supporting “proximate” leaders and local communities - critical for enabling sustained impact on the toughest social and environmental challenges funders seek to tackle. Interest in collaboratives is growing across Asia and Africa, but there’s still a long way to go to fully unlock their potential in the Global South. If you know of collaboratives doing impactful work, especially in Southeast Asia, please share them! 📖 Read the full report for more insights: https://lnkd.in/guH_T9uK #philanthropy #collaborativephilanthropy #impact

Children take time to grow. Change doesn't happen overnight. Ambitions and visions take time to be realized. And the challenges of poverty, exclusion and gender bias don't go away. This is an excellent article by Cynthia Steele from EMpower—The Emerging Markets Foundation on the benefits a trust-based, long-term, flexible funding model. I highly recommend it. #empoweringyouth #emergingmarkets
"At a time when the world seems so uncertain, when funders and grantees require almost superhuman agility, it may seem counterintuitive to think long term. After all, funders don’t like to have our hands tied — it seems too risky. Yet by investing in locally driven NGOs run by visionary leaders who understand their communities and are committed to learning, taking the long view will yield dividends." Don't miss EMpower President & CEO Cynthia Steele's new op-ed for Devex.
Opinion: To shift power effectively, we funders have to think long term
