This past weekend, I wrapped up stage managing a local theatre production. While people think that community theatre is "just for fun," here's three ways I use stage managing skills in my work as a career consultant: -Stage managers are event planners. A theatre production is a full-scale event which requires the ability to keep organized all the elements to make a cohesive event. I plan events (large and small scale) where understanding the big picture and the impact on the audience is essential. -Stage managers are problem solvers. Even a step further, they have to predict what will go wrong before it can ever go wrong and prep ahead to avoid issues. While this can seem like a negative view, it actually helps to know alternatives when developing workshops or when to pivot. -Stage managers are detail-oriented. They need to know the who/what/when/where/why for every scene, every cue, every prop, etc. and then lay it all out so everyone is on the same page. This is why I can ask such specific questions in career consulting and get to the heart of my students' needs. Today, I want to give love to other community theatre stage managers, as well as those on cast and crew for the dedication and skills that they bring to other facets of their work and life. #stagemanagers #yinzercareercoach #wednesdaywisdom #theatre

Teamwork 👍🏻 Lessons from the Theatre | Part 3️⃣ 🎭 The rehearsal and preparation time frame for a theatre production is typically 4-6 weeks before a paying audience arrives to see the magic 💰 That means everyone involved in theatre both onstage and back stage needs to get through the typical team formation process ‘forming, storming, normimg and performing’ stage pretty quickly 💨 So how do they do it? What can we learn from the theatre? 🧐 💎 Purpose - as discussed in Part 2️⃣ this is lazer sharp and clear to ALL involved - it makes sense cognitively and emotionally 💎 Egos left at door - theatre can attract some major seasoned celebrities as well as people who are undertaking their first acting role or their first theatre job. Everyone functions as an ensemble recognising they are all equally important to the production’s success 💎 Discipline - a strange word to use in a business context, but without discipline theatre productions would fall apart - but more on that in Part 4️⃣ coming soon 😎 Keep shining ⭐️⭐️⭐️

Malvern Theatres is thrilled to announce that it has received planning permission to complete significant improvements at Malvern Theatres, including a new 240-seat auditorium and essential upgrades to the Priory Park entrance, including a new elevator. The auditorium plans will allow the theatres to do new and different types of work, including more community theatre, as well as additional classes and workshops. A little background of the same can be found here: https://lnkd.in/e_-AUU2A The enhanced park-side entrance, which will feature better spaced stairs, additional handrails, upgraded lighting, and an elevator, will greatly improve the accessibility from the park to the theatre. The Forum Theatre will also witness improvements to make it more user-friendly, particularly for people with movement issues, including better wheelchair positions. There will be new workshop spaces and a small amphitheatre in the park for community use. The theatre will remain open throughout the build, with the Festival Theatre, Cinema, and Studio One, all operating as normal. The project, which is being led by Malvern Hills District Council, funded by central government, and designed by renowned theatre architect Burrell Foley Fischer LLP follows on from the success of the recently added Studio One, which is already at capacity since opening just over a year ago, and the accompanying Changing Places facility (the first of its kind in the district), a lifeline for people with severe additional needs. Malvern Theatres would like to take this opportunity to thank all our supporters and audiences for always being welcoming of the new developments and the opportunities of more community-led theatre than ever they bring along for the region.

Excellent theatre professionals are expressive, wired for deep connection, and detail-driven. They think in terms of the big “why” and what tactics they can use to achieve their “why.” They have deep wells of energy they can draw from if they catch your vision. No other major/job requires students/employees to memorizes hours worth of material, intimately know the themes and desires of the characters, and put together a presentation that leads an audience of strangers to understand and empathize with a story they may have never heard until that moment. If you have a story that needs telling, hire a theatre major.

[StageFright Edutainment Industral Theatre] As live theatre performers, receiving a standing ovation is the highest form of honour, but receiving one from the Executive Mayor of the City of Cape Town together with the city’s top 300 leadership just takes this honour to a different level. How does the future for the Movie Theatre business look? This past week we've talked about the survival of the movie theatre, the recovery and how important it is for the Hollywood studios to get back to producing great movies (in quantity) and for the theatre market to get "right sized" and reset the rents accordingly. The movie theatre landlords are a big part of this recovery. Without them, there is no film to watch or popcorn to eat. They're the other party in the rent resetting equation (negotiation)! It's very important to have the traffic of a successful movie theatre in the shopping center and mixed use project. When the rent resetting negotiation begins, landlords need to see the deal through movie theatre eyes. The Cinema Bridge has those eyes and brings over 100 years of movie theatre experience to assist landlords in seeing the fair market deal with data-backed solutions. So, the movie theatre survival is real, the recovery is at work and the future looks bright! Thats our story and I'm sticking to it!

🎞️ Entertainment Industry Professionals: Do you struggle with summarizing the vast scope of work you are able to do? In the arts it is normal for one person to cover the work of multiple individuals in other industries. An immediate example that comes to mind is how a stage manager in the theatre industry easily covers the jobs of four people in other industries. When explaining my experience to people outside of entertainment, it seems like it’s impossible to have done such a wide variety in my past roles. I’d love to hear from other entertainment professionals about their experience describing what exactly it is that you do, and the value you bring to the table? #entertainmentindustry #artswork #creativeprofessionals
