Attorneys Jessica Molinares Kalpakis and Christine Vasconcellos recently attended the Hispanic National Bar Association’s Annual Conference. The conference hosted educational CLEs, networking opportunities, and more importantly bonding over a shared profession and culture. Many of the sessions emphasized the advancement of Latinas in the Law, and the impact of the Latina vote. The Hispanic National Bar Association was founded half a century ago to help advance the careers of Hispanic attorneys, judges, law professors, legal assistants, law students and other legal professionals through education, programs, professional development and scholarships. #law #lawfirm #professionaldevelopment #diversity

June is just around the corner, which means ES Scholars (my favorite DEI program) is close enough to touch! Not only does our 3 week summer pipeline program prepare participants for the rigors of law school through two weeks of actual classes run by our amazing Emory law school professor, but it (i) helps participants understand how big law firms work, (ii) provides insight on areas of practice, (iii) helps build interviewing, networking, and resume drafting skills, and (iv) gives participants an understanding of the differences between law firm and in-house legal team careers. This is one post that really should be shared far and wide. 🙂
The #ESScholars 2024 application is here! Established in 2005, ES Scholars is a three-week summer intensive program open to all (with a preference for those already admitted to law school) and designed to introduce people from backgrounds underrepresented within the legal industry to a career in law. With cohorts in Atlanta, Washington DC and New York, the program curriculum consists of: → An introduction to contracts, legal writing and bluebooking classes taught by an Emory law professor. → Panel discussions on a variety of topics including navigating one’s law school experience, insight into the law firm recruitment process, exploring in-house careers with our client partner, and much more! → Networking with fellow ES Scholars, ES Scholars Alums, Eversheds Sutherland attorneys and other legal professionals. "The ABA has accredited a handful of fully online juris doctor programs, but only those offered by accredited law schools that also have brick-and-mortar campuses. The proposed change would allow graduates of fully online law schools that are ABA-accredited to sit for the bar exam in any state. The council could make a decision when it next meets in May." "Law school professors should have no fewer than five to ten years experience in the practice of law. They should be lawyers who have dealt with every aspect of the practice including litigation, client counseling, arbitrations, and administrative agencies. The lack of practical experience in law school professors continues to be a weak point of legal education. How can a teacher train lawyers to do what she has never done? A stint on a law review and a circuit court clerkship is no substitute for years of practical training. Many legal scholars are not cut out to be practicing lawyers, yet the law school must train practitioners in greater proportion than scholars. The lack of experience of most law school professors does a disservice to their students and to the public which receives a constant stream of new lawyers ill-equipped to deal with real legal conflicts." An excerpt from article entitled ‘A Plea for Lawyer-Schools.’ By Jerome Frank published in 1947. Jerome Frank was an American legal scholar and judge. He served as a federal judge on the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit from 1941 to 1957. He taught at Yale Law School. #LegalEducation #LawSchool #PracticalExperience #LegalPractice #FutureLawyers

Law schools are becoming more demographically diverse, but the legal field is still disproportionately white and male. As the total number of law school enrollees fell from 2010 to 2023, so did the numbers of white and Asian American students. Meanwhile, the number of Hispanic/Latino students and multiracial students grew. White students still made up 60% of students enrolled at ABA-accredited law schools in 2023, down from 66% in 2011. https://bit.ly/4cfy1oD
