Is quitting your new #pharmacy job after 6 months WRONG? Have you ever felt torn between loyalty to your current job and a new job opportunity? This dilemma is common in the pharmacy world. Recently, we helped a client transition from retail to a hospital job. Then, an amazing remote specialty position came along, but she almost didn’t take it because she felt disloyal to the hospital. Many might jump at a dream job without hesitation, but #pharmacists are a different mindset—remarkably loyal, sometimes to their own detriment. Before I left my job, I stayed an extra five months to train my replacement and cover my partner's leave. I didn’t have to, but I felt responsible. Yet, when companies face tough times, they make cuts to stay afloat, often showing little loyalty in return. Why do we, as pharmacists, carry the burden of loyalty when companies don't reciprocate? What is the average tenure of a pharmacist in the USA? Data extrapolated from LinkedIn puts this number at 2.5 years median tenure. This number almost doubled when looking at more senior roles, for example, a Director of Pharmacy had an average tenure of 4.8 years. If you've been in your current role for more than 3 years and don't see any progression on the horizon, it is worth considering other options. How much revenue does a pharmacy lose if there is a pharmacist vacancy? Not an easy question to answer... A 2017 study found that independent pharmacies with a vacancy experienced a revenue decrease of 12.8% on average. Given the average revenue of an independent pharmacy in the USA is $3,459,814 this would equate to a loss of $360,000. An average of $30,000 per month! Given that using an agency to fill this role is far cheaper than this yet many owners are so against the idea it seems bizarre. This is only an estimate and will vary from setting to setting but if this is an average I can imagine it's costing some much more. Candidate experience is everything 🌟 When I started in the Pharmacy Recruiting space, I immediately knew I was going to love it. Coming from a background in (what I had planned to be my lifelong career) healthcare, I just knew. The reason why I knew, was because I was able to connect with individuals who also serve a purpose and have a sincere passion for this industry. During a phone interview with a Pharmacist, I instantly could pick up that this particular candidate was going to be a *unicorn* for our team. She had impressive past achievements and was single handedly, without hesitation, able to lead a short staffed team for months. It took me maybe 5 minutes into the interview to know she was it. There was no doubt in my mind that she would knock the hiring manager interview out of the park. I immediately took action and scheduled her for a final interview for not only the Staff Pharmacist opening, but for a Supervisor opening. Prior to hanging up the phone during our phone interview, she said, "I just love you!" I was at first taken back, but, then I remembered, this is exactly why I am sending her through. Not even a couple of days later, she was offered the Supervisor position. A couple of months later, I received the most heartfelt card in my mailbox thanking me for everything that I did for her. She has now been with the company for 7 months and still continues to reach out to me and thank me. Being able to provide a fast, seamless, yet productive interview process is so important.
