According to the National Breast Cancer Foundation, “more than 360,000 people will be diagnosed with breast cancer” this year. While that is a sad reality, when breast cancer is caught early, there is a 99 percent survival rate. This is your annual reminder to make sure you're scheduling those important mammograms, and if you notice any differences – lumps, hard spots, etc. – schedule an appointment with your doctor as soon as possible. October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. It is a time annually devoted to educating everyone about breast cancer and the importance of early detection and access to timely, high-quality care. According to the American Cancer Society, when breast cancer is detected early, and is in the localized stage, the 5-year relative survival rate is 99%. Breast cancer death rates declined 42% from 1989 to 2021 thanks to early detection, as well as new therapies and targeted treatments. BCRF investigator Dr. Nancy Lin leads research focused on advancing new strategies to prevent and treat breast cancer metastasis to the brain and central nervous system. Right now, there are more treatments helping people with MBC live longer, but there are only so many available and, unfortunately, they eventually can stop working.
