I hang out with a lot of firefighters. We talk shop about breaching, mass casualty events, etc. They tell me- and the stats back it up- that due to factors like fire safety education, structural designs, fire detection and suppression systems in buildings- that the vast majority of their work is not fighting fires. They attend the occasional one- and often it's a doozy!- but the vast majority of their calls are for auto wrecks, hazmat, medicals, etc. It's been this way for decades, all across Canada and I suspect much of the rest of the developed world too. And yet- rightly- nobody has sought to furlough firefighters, shutter fire stations, or change the firefighter training curriculum to reflect that they rarely fight fires. Smoke-eaters rightly live in a world of relentless preparation and readiness for the worst case scenario. Thank God they do. I'm delighted that they rarely need that heavy-rescue rig, or that mega-long aerial ladder truck....but I am also delighted that they have it and are ready to use it. It's not a perfect analogy but I think it works to point out the wrong-thinking of the ivory tower dwellers in Ottawa who decided that we don't really need to worry about fighting a major conventional war ever again, and wrote national security and defence policy aligned with that view. The Finns and Swedes haven't fought a conventional war in almost 80 years but they are far more prepared to fight than any other democracy you could name. Perhaps proximity to the world's biggest butcher kept them focused. Ditto, the Swiss, who are armed to the teeth (well, their navy is a joke, mind you) and yet haven't fought a war in centuries. How did we get it so wrong? Do we have the time or even the inclination to fix this? This can't wait to be a 2025 election issue. This needs to be fixed now. It may already be too late. I want to celebrate that Shields & Stripes is able to help these 8 military folks and first responders. I don't share much about the physical, emotional, and mental challenges I had during my time in the military, but after 3 years of being retired, but after reading this post by Steven Nisbet I feel empowered and compelled to say something. Starting at MEPS and continuing through basic, AIT and every single command I supported in my 24+ year career, my leadership told me to keep my medical problems to myself. Being sick was weakness, being injured affected readiness, being depressed would cost me my clearance. I didn't go to sick call, I didn't go on quarters, I didn't report head injuries, I didn't complain about broken bones, numbness in my arms, I minimized SERIOUS medical issues in order to deploy three times, and I never seriously participated mental health therapy. The VA has been a great resource for me to start to undue some of the physical impact my body suffered, but I was never able to crack the mental health code by using VA resources. To me, I felt like an imposter, like how did my trauma compare to that of some of my peers with purple hearts and CABs? How did my trauma compare to the experiences of Vietnam era veterans like my father? After white-knuckling my way through sobriety, and starting to find value in myself as a person, I reluctantly applied for and was accepted into the Shields & Stripes program. It was through their concentrated and collaborative, whole body approach to healing that I was finally able to unpack the container I had filled with trauma, depression, moral injuries, anger, shame, guilt, anxiety, and fear. We all deserve to be whole; to be free of the burdens we carry from our experiences; to be the best version of ourselves. If you are an active duty service member or veteran, or if you are a current or retired LE professional or first responder, you should apply to the program. If you recall a few months ago, the United States Marine Corps released their latest #DoDSkillBridge instruction which mirrored the Navy's. It was rescinded within a few days because it wasn't actually "approved". Well, now it is approved. Most of us think about #SkillBridge from the service member perspective. But there are other perspectives to consider... ✅ The military will remain the military, and each CO has a certain level of readiness to maintain with their Unit ✅ #SkillBridgeOpportunities are a luxury and not a right. Each service member should understand that they'll be transitioning at some point, and utilize the other programs available to them (i.e. COOL) in order to best prepare themselves for Life 2.0 ➡️➡️ While I won't ague against the need for transitioning resources for the military community, what other industry / job / or company do you know of that is willing to pay you full-time and not receive any immediate benefit from doing so❓❓ It's not cheap to keep a service member employed and not receive a direct benefit of their employment 💯 There's still a need for the DOD to narrow down who should be participating in the program. #SkillBridge wasn't designed to support 200K #TransitioningServiceMembers each year. It was originally designed to support service members who have MOS's that don't specifically translate into civilian work. If you do cyber, and want to continue doing cyber post military, consider your #SkillBridge approval a gift. If you're a tank driver, or Boatswain Mate, #SkillBridge was designed for you. National Guard/Reserves must have 90 days minimum of non-training active duty service or 6 credible years in the Selected Reserves (other terms apply - msg me for more info!). Spouses eligibility is reserved for surviving spouses of a service member or Veteran who died in the line of duty or from service-related disability (void is spouse remarries). 🇺🇸 Time on Station: Buyers should have a minimum of 2 years remaining on duty station where you’ll be purchasing a home. In the event you receive orders before that 2 year mark, call me! Mold x Barracks x Advocacy The United States Marine Corps, alone, needs $18,000,000,000 to raze, replace, and renovate barracks across the force. $18 billion. Just the Marine Corps.** Just barracks. The painful fact of the matter is Congress is not going to write that check and they certainly are not going to write it all at once. Whether we like it or not, childcare centers, barracks, gyms, and chow halls are not priority, despite our knowledge that they’re directly tied to quality of life. Will Congress continue to hold hearings questioning plummeting recruitment and retention? Absolutely. Will they continue to let quality of life projects fall to the bottom of the list? Likely. And with substantial conflicts unfolding across nearly every combatant command, it’s a heartbreaking pattern I don’t see changing anytime soon. But it could. If you’re scrolling through your timeline, outraged about mold in a shower in a barracks, rather than merely sharing the post with some incendiary remarks,* I IMPLORE YOU to contact your state and federal representatives. It’s easy to click share. I get it. But it only takes a slight bit more effort to contact your representatives and impact true change. The squeaky wheel gets the grease and, in the case of milcon, the loudest advocates get the money.
