In 2022-2023, 6 million people immigrated to the US, far outpacing the 900,000-person annual average in the 2010s. These new arrivals are already having an impact on the #housing market, but their full effect on household growth will take some time to be fully realized, writes Riordan Frost in a new blog. https://lnkd.in/eprx385R

"As we discussed in our recently released State of the Nation’s Housing report, these new arrivals are already having an impact on the housing market, but their full effect on household growth will take some time to be fully realized. Projecting the number of new households from the estimated 6 million new immigrants is difficult given the lack of full demographic information, but considering what is known about these new arrivals, alongside historical data, enables a clearer view of effects on household formation." #housingdemand #householdgrowth

The unauthorized immigrant population in the United States grew to 11.0 million in 2022, according to new Pew Research Center estimates based on the 2022 American Community Survey, the most recent year available. The increase from 10.5 million in 2021 reversed a long-term downward trend from 2007 to 2019. This is the first sustained increase in the unauthorized immigrant population since the period from 2005 to 2007. However, the number of unauthorized immigrants living in the U.S. in 2022 was still below the peak of 12.2 million in 2007. https://lnkd.in/gfQ5vduN #unauthorized #immigrants #living #unitedstates #pewresearchcenter #data

Immigration is not a bug, but a vital feature of the economies of the West. Yet even in an immigrant melting pot like the US the topic is a political minefield. Politicians must work harder to devise the kind of immigration programs that are acceptable to the wider (and aging) population. Otherwise, we shall face political upheaval and economic decline, sooner rather than later. “There are going to be many more people over 90 and over 100, and although they are in better health than in the past, they will need support and care. We have a challenge because the ratio between people of working age and older people is going to be lower,” said Tara Watson, director of the Brookings Center for Economic Security, in a conference on the economy and immigration policy. In addition to an aging population, the U.S. also faces a plummeting fertility rate, which is currently around 1.7 births per woman. Thus, if in 1970 there were 5.7 people of working age — between 18 and 64 years old — for every person over 65 years old; in 2020, there were 3.7 workers, and by 2040 there are expected to be only 2.7. “Migrants are not going to solve the problem of Social Security solvency, but they can help,” Watson argues. #demographicdecline #immigration #labor #competitiveness

Interesting column on the need for legal immigration by Marc Thiessen in Thursday's edition of The Washington Post. "But the fact is, we need legal immigrants. There are 8.7 million unfilled jobs in the United States, and there are not enough native-born workers to fill them. According to Census Bureau data, the U.S. population is now growing at less than replacement levels. The only thing stopping us from overall population decline is immigrants, who are projected to account for 88 percent of U.S. population growth through 2065." #immigrationreform #America #immigration #freedom #USA #immigrants #skilledtrades #skilledworkers #jobsavailable #jobopportunities #workforceshortage #workforcedevelopment #workforcesolutions #power #communication #broadband #electricity #criticalinfrastructure #construction #constructionindustry #contractors #PCCA https://lnkd.in/e749H--7

Continous, massive population movements, changes are unprecedented, unsustainable for sending, receiving countries. The result of community destabilizing policy by economists, not by the people. Last week, Canada’s immigration minister, Marc Miller, announced that the Liberal federal government plans to reduce the number of non-permanent residents (NPR) in Canada from the current 6.2% share of total population to 5% over the next three years. Ten years ago, NPRs made up roughly 2% of Canada’s population, and since then, the surge in NPRs has contributed to Canada’s rapid population growth. On the surface, this reduction doesn’t sound like a noteworthy announcement that will have much of an impact, but a closer look at the data makes it clear that this is a significant shift in policy and one that will have wide-reaching effects, particularly on the housing market. The number of NPRs in Canada in the fourth quarter of 2022 was roughly 1.7M, which increased to just over 2.5M a year later, an 800K increase. For the federal government to reduce the portion of NPRs to 5% of the population, the number of NPRs in Canada would have to decline by around 450K people over the next three years. While this change may not have a drastic effect on the number of NPRs in Canada immediately, it will have a significant effect on how quickly Canada’s population grows each year. Over the next three years, while roughly 450K people will arrive in Canada due to net immigration of permanent residents, a corresponding decline of roughly 150K non-permanent residents will result in Canada’s population growing by roughly 300K people each year. This means that Canada’s population, which grew by 1.2M in a single year last quarter, may grow by only 300K per year 12 months from now. This dramatic change in managing Canada’s population growth is a significant change in approach by the Liberal federal government, one that is a game-changer for our housing affordability crisis. Canada’s previous approach to the housing crisis, which focused only on trying to increase supply while our population continued to grow far more rapidly ensured that our housing shortage and affordability crisis would only get worse each year. Reducing Canada’s population growth to roughly 300K people per year will take some pressure off home price appreciation in the years to come. Canada will still have a housing shortage, but the shortage will not be getting worse each year, and, in fact, housing completions are likely to outpace population growth which means Canada will be gradually reducing its overall shortage. This is not an immediate solution to our housing affordability crisis but it is a correct and necessary step. https://lnkd.in/ghXCvXtA
