Leading in a liberal democracy is not about having your way on everything. Proper leadership in a liberal democracy is acting in the service of others. It requires careful consideration of the needs of others. It requires the prudence to put oneself and one’s feelings aside. https://lnkd.in/gR8NGJPb

Nonviolent protests align more closely with democratic principles and tend to be more effective. Therefore, while democracies should protect the right to protest, they also have a responsibility to discourage violence and destruction, balancing the need for expression with the preservation of public order and property.

Taking a closer look at the power and pull of political protest, Jason I. hears from Dr Benjamin Abrams about protest - what's the point? They explore responses to the rise of populism and what we can learn from the research evidence to inform policy and practice. Listen: https://pod.fo/e/257ea1 We hear: - what does research theory say about how and why movements such as the 1789 French Revolution, the Arab Spring as well as Occupy Wall Street and Black Lives Matter take place? - what can policy do for ‘coping strategies’ against populism and preventing violence in mass protest? - what might happen during and after the US elections this November? Production note: *recorded on 8 July 2024, before the assassination attempt on Donald Trump (13 July 2024) and Joe Biden’s withdrawal from the US presidential election race (21 July 2024).

🚨 New blog for the ISPP. Amidst global attacks on the right to protest, I draw on my doctoral research to defend its value - not merely as the expression of dissent but as crucial to exploring and prefiguring alternative worlds.

Theories of democracy generally value citizen activism as an essential component of a healthy democratic system. Hence, people engage in protests, participate in signature campaigns, and contribute to online and offline public discourse. What happens, however, if instead of individuals, institutions or branches of government engage in activism? Consider courts, for instance. Read here: https://lnkd.in/gF34BMFc

Digital Media Researcher @ Rutgers University | Qualitative and Quantitative Research Design and Analysis
I’m excited to announce the publication of my latest research in Digital Journalism! While social movements are not my primary research focus, I find them extremely important to study, and I believe they play a crucial role in shaping our understanding of societies and power dynamics. Protests are instrumental in forming and reforming norms and policies and, most importantly, promoting justice. In this paper, I aim to challenge the negative values associated with portraying protestors’ violence in the news by closely reading videos of Mahsa (Zhina) Amini’s protests and revisiting the protest paradigm. I also offer a new perspective on such portrayals and strategies for keeping protest coverage both appealing and sympathetic to non-locals. The article can be found here: https://lnkd.in/eJ7DPdeH

Sharing the insightful op-ed by Lindsay Schubiner of Western States Center which I mentioned in my last post as I had not considered the co-opting of protests and what role that might have in furthering white nationalism. This article also makes me think about More in Common and their work revealing the perception divide - how there is a gap between our perception of what other people believe and what they actually believe. Will post that quiz next! https://lnkd.in/gZSJndu9

8moThis is a well-written piece. Friends in the GTA found the inebriated and cocaine-stimulated antics of Mayor Bob Ford a continuing source of outward embarrassment and intra-community dark comedy until someone fit to hold office finally replaced him. Unfortunately Calgarians face the embarrassments brought by their new Mayor, but with none of the levity. Insisting that Jewish trickery sought to make her seem to support a war, is a disinformation ploy a past generation came to expect of Herr Goebbels, the propaganda minister of Nazi Germany, but is an unpleasant surprise coming from a Canadian elected official. To begin with, Israelis would prefer not to have been invaded the 7th October by a terrorist army that slaughtered civilians and took hostages, and many Jews, as well as Christians, Hindus, Muslims and people of other beliefs feel threatened that an army of religious bigots launched a campaign of genocide against those with whom they disagree. The Haultain piece underscores that free society requires the capacity to disagree about anything not proven to be factual. The free world defeated past forces of totalitarianism, precisely because most of us kept open minds to differing views while disputes were aired.
