Memory Check: Exploring Cognitive Health Are you concerned about your memory, losing things, forgetting appointments or trouble coming up with words? Or maybe you are observing signs in a family member or friend. These could be signs of Mild Cognitive Impairment, or MCI. MCI is a condition that some older adults experience when they have more memory or thinking problems than other adults their age. The objective is to distinguish MCI from normal aging or dementia and to look for underlying causes that are potentially reversible. A good place to start an evaluation is with your regular doctor as he or she knows you and your medical history, and will complete a physical with blood work. A referral to a neurologist and a brain CT scan may possibly be part of the process. Seeking professional guidance is a key to nurturing cognitive well-being and savoring every moment of life. Cognitive reserve is the idea that people develop a reserve of thinking abilities throughout their lives that can help protect them from the effects of aging and disease. It's a way of describing how people differ in their ability to perform tasks, which can make some people more resilient than others. You can think of cognitive reserve as your brain's ability to improvise and find alternate ways of getting a job done. It reflects how agile your brain is in pulling in skills and capacities to solve problems and cope with challenges. Harvard Health Publishing https://lnkd.in/e6yewUvX.
