The first in a series of Atomic IBD posts with my thoughts after ECCO. We are starting with the PROFILE study, the clinical aspects, the failure of the biomarker and the implications for our global IBD community.

The microbiota pattern in young-onset and old-onset #colorectal_cancer appears to be similar. NOTES: - well-known CRC-associated taxa, such as #Clostridium_symbiosum, #Peptostreptococcus_stomatis, #Parvimonas_micra and #Hungatella_hathewayi were significantly enriched in both old- and young-onset patients. - Similar strain-level patterns of #Fusobacterium_nucleatum, #Bacteroides_fragilis and #Escherichia_coli were observed for oCRC and yCRC. - Almost all old CRC-associated metagenomic pathways had directionally concordant changes in young patients.

Excited to share our paper on staging systems in multiple myeloma (MM) that just came out! Using data from Flatiron Health, we evaluated the widely used R-ISS staging system as well as two newer staging systems, R2-ISS and MASS, which both incorporate additive risk from having multiple concurrent cytogenetic abnormalities. We found that both R2-ISS and MASS performed similarly in predicting overall survival in a contemporary cohort of US patients with MM and re-classified patients with R-ISS stage II MM into more refined prognostic subsets. However, as all models (including stratification per number of high-risk cytogenetic abnormalities) performed with a c-statistic close to 0.6, their performance remains suboptimal. https://lnkd.in/d9ycUnct

The renewal of the Rare Pediatric Disease Priority Review Voucher (PPRV) must be a top priority for Congress. MassBio signed the Council of State Bioscience Associations (CSBA) letter calling for its reauthorization earlier this month. Thank you, Leslie J Williams, for bringing these issues to the forefront with this excellent op-ed in the BBJ about how PPRV helps address the economics of rare-disease research. Leslie writes, "If the PPRV program isn't renewed, it could threaten progress not just for the biotech industry, but for the more than one million American children suffering from rare diseases. For these kids and their families, the PPRV program isn't just abstract policy — it's a beacon of hope for a healthier future." Just a few weeks ago I was with Leslie at HC Bioscience, Inc. with an incredible 10-year-old from Texas with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. He was scientist for a day thanks to Make-A-Wish. They even had business cards made up for him, and I have one on my desk as a daily reminder.
